EPM / OBIEE certification with Windows 2008

When working in Support, there are some questions that are asked over and over again.
One typical type among these are questions of compatibility or certification.
With every release of a new OS, a new patch to an OS a new browser, a new Java version etc. users are worried, confused, irritated and most of all in need to find out:
  • Does this new version of X work with my existing version Z?
  • If we want to use the new version X of this program - what version does Z need to be to cater for that?
  • Is X certified (supported) with Z?
  • Where do I find information for the compatibility?
Over the next week(s) I will bring out a number of posts that deal with this kind of thing with regards to EPM / OBIEE
  • Internet Explorer 10 compatibility
  • Windows 2008 support
  • Office 2013 compatibility
  • Java 7 support

So let us continue with the second

"Windows 2008 compatibility"

EPM and Windows 2008

Answer as of the certification Tab in MOS:
"Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System 11.1.2.2.0 is certified on Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) 2008 R2"

Actually - here is a screenshot of what OSses are supported as of the latest version of EPM:

OBIEE and Windows 2008

Answer as of the certification Tab in MOS:
"Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11.1.1.7.0 is certified on Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit) 2008 R2"

And as above another screenshot of what OSses are supported by OBIEE right now:

Please note:
Windows 8 is not mentioned on either of these (EPM or OBIEE) so it is not currently certified/supported.
(There may be versions or parts of the software that already supports Windows 8, but either they are not visible in certification yet, or I simply did not find them.)

General Certification Information

As opposed to the post from Tuesday I will not go through the Certification Tab in MOS again. You should understand how that works by now and I will not insult you by further bragging about it. Instead I will make use of your attention and mention our Certification Communities. We do have several:

The bad thing about these Communities is, that you need to log in to actually post in them (just as you would for a support call).

The good thing about them is, that there are multiple people watching the threads and it is likely that you get your answer within a day or even faster. And it is not only ONE person viewing these, but any customer or consultant or support engineer can monitor and post in the communities. So chances are, that your answer is even quicker compared to a support call.

EPM / OBIEE certification with Internet Explorer 10

So let us start with the first

"Internet Explorer 10 compatibility"

EPM and IE 10

The answer if Enterprise Performance Management is compatible with MS Internet Explorer 10 can easily be found in  KM Doc 1492671.1

So here is the plain answer as it currently stands:

"Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 are both planned for EPM 11.1.2.3.x
Availability is currently planned for the end of CY 2013."

Make sure to check back on that note, as any future announcement like this is subject to change.

OBIEE and IE 10

For OBIEE the answer is given in the KM Doc 1567907.1 and reads:

"The cause of this issue [... as described in 1567907.1...] is due to the fact that Internet Explorer 10 is not currently certified or supported except for with OBIEE version 10.1.3.4.2" (<-updated see section below)

It also links out to the  OBIEE certification documentation on OTN. The compatibility for OBIEE with various browsers can be found in the documentation there.

General Certification Information

Apart from the obvious way of opening the knowledge base and punching in your product name and the words "IE 10" and hitting enter, there is also a more sophisticated way of dealing with the above questions:

Check the certification tab in MOS.

In our case for the Internet Explorer question we get the following answers for the two products:

and

UPDATE:

My boss pointed out that we did have an earlier blogpost about the IE 10 compatibility with OBIEE:
https://blogs.oracle.com/proactivesupportEPM/entry/obiee10g_ie10

So for the version 10.1.3.4.2 (only!) we have to acknowledge that this version is indeed certified with IE 10.

Unfortunately that one is not yet listed in the compatibility tab in MOS but a KM Doc exists:

OBIEE 10g: Support for Internet Explorer 10 (Doc ID 1569828.1)

And while you are at it, you might as well bookmark this one, which lists the IE support/certification in a nice overview:

OBIEE 10g and 11g: Support and Certification of Internet Explorer Browser Versions (Doc ID 1347987.1)

(We will make sure that KM Doc 1567907.1 gets corrected/updated and apologize for the confusion :-) )

My Oracle Support Meet Up Event (within OpenWorld 2013)

(in via Mel)

Imagine you have spent a second long exhausting day at Oracle OpenWorld 2013....

Imagine you are now hungry, thirsty, want to rest your feet for a while and chat with people of similar occupation

Imagine someone now offers you this:

Looks inviting - doesn't it?

That is exactly why Oracle Support is hosting an MOS Community meeting at the end of day 2 of Oracle Open World 2013.

You probably already know that the OpenWorld will take place in San Francisco (US) from September 22nd to 26th, but the MOS Community meeting on

Monday, September 23, 2013 from 6:30pm – 9:30pm

may have slipped your attention.

Well - snacks and drinks are on the tab of Oracle Support at that meeting, and you may have the chance to put a face to some of the names you see posting in the community.
The good thing is: admission to the meeting is free, only pre-registration is required.

So with this you are invited to head over to the Oracle Communities, where you find the link to registration for this event and to the Oracle OpenWorld Website.

BI Mobile App Designer - Training

(in via Lia)

Now - with the lately released BI Mobile Apps Designer ( we reported earlier ; ) )  it might all be good and nice, but the real question for this kind of thing is:

How do I get started?

Lucky as we are, Oracle has thought along the same lines and provides an "Oracle by Example" training for BI Mobile Apps Designer.

Description:
"This Oracle-by-Example (OBE) introduces features of Oracle BI Mobile App Designer, introduced in Release 11.1.1.7.1 of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (Oracle BI EE). This OBE covers creating basic mobile apps, designing apps with tile pages, and creating navigation lists for investigating data."

You can find this in the Oracle Learning Library (OLL), which is available for customers, partners and Oracle employees. (A direct link is BI App Designer OTN )

Oh, and while you are on it - have a look around the OLL - there are tons of Examples for a variety of products.

If there is something specific that you need and it can not be found there, you may want to use their contact form, to get in touch and put in a request for content.

(in via Lia)

A new KM note (  KM Doc ID 1576427.1 ) has been created to point you to the

Applications Reporting and Analytics Learning Center

However, this one does not contain much more than a link to the original (so it is useful for bookmarking :) ) but you can as well just go directly to where it points to:

There is no need to log in to consume the contents of this Learning Center which include video-answers to questions like:

  • How do I create a new report?
  • How do I print a report?
  • How do I schedule a report for distribution?
  • How do I embed a report in a sales dashboard?
  • How can I view analytics with a mobile device?
  • How do I export a report to Microsoft Excel?

We hope you find this valuable.
If you are missing anything or have suggestions for more content, let us know, and we can let the makers of this Learning Center know your feedback.

OBIEE and WebCenter integration (Portal, Spaces, ADF, )

(in via Lia)

Old news for interested readers of our OBIEE Community, but we want to mention that another two very detailed notes about portlet integration into OBIEE were made public lately:

One titeled:
Embedding OBIEE 11g Content in ADF Applications - WebCenter Portal Framework Applications (Doc ID 1571783.1)

It contains step by step instructions on how to embed OBIEE catalog objects (Analysis, Dashboards, Dashboard pages, etc.) into ADF Applications - WebCenter Portal Framework Applications created with JDeveloper and deploy the application in a managed server.

And another one:
How To Integrate OBIEE11g and WebCenter Portal: Spaces (Doc ID 1572758.1)

which unsurprisingly provides step by step instructions on how to integrate OBIEE and WebCenter Portal: Spaces.
It shows how to add OBIEE Web Catalog object (Analysis, Dashboards, Dashboard pages, etc.) into Spaces.
