Isolate Your Customizations in App Engine Programs

Matthew Haavisto
Product Management Director

The ability to customize PeopleSoft applications has always been a strength of our products.  That ability came with a cost, though: customized applications are more difficult and expensive to upgrade.  To address that, we have been making major enhancements and investment in providing customers the means to isolate customizations so those changes don't impact new application images.  This streamlines the life-cycle and enables customers to benefit from the latest images and features more easily.

Features like Event Mapping allow you to inject custom code without impacting delivered logic.  Drop Zones enable you to add your fields and other elements to delivered pages without affecting content.  Page and Field Configurator provides the ability to make common changes to pages like hiding fields or pages, changing field labels, adding default values to fields, making fields and pages read-only, or marking fields as required.

Now with PeopleTools 8.58 we've extended the ability to isolate customizations to Application Engine programs.  This feature enables you to configure an Application Engine action plug-in to alter the SQL or PeopleCode actions of any Application Engine program.  The plug-in action is executed at runtime. This effectively allows you to modify code without actually customizing or re-designing the Application Engine program.

Create your custom App Engine plugin code in App Designer as usual.  Then you can configure the selected SQL or PeopleCode action of the Application Engine program by adding your new SQL, PeopleCode, or both and/or by replacing the existing SQL or PeopleCode action through PIA in the AE Action Plugin page.

Go to the AE Action Plugin page at PeopleTools > Application Engine
