PeopleSoft has invested heavily in providing frameworks that enable customers to configure and personalize their systems as an alternative to costly customizations. This includes Branding, Activity Guides, Related Content, Event Mapping, Drop Zones, etc. Such frameworks often involve configuration.

As customers adopt these frameworks, they would naturally end up with a lot of configuration data created online as opposed to custom or customized objects in App Designer. That begs the question. How do they manage the lifecycle of these configurations? How do they migrate these configurations from one environment to another? It would be a very tedious and error-prone process to manually create the configurations in every single environment.

Enter Application Data Sets (ADS)! This is a fantastic tool to do just that – migrate configuration data from one environment to another eliminating all the manual steps. ADS has been around for a while now. You can learn all about ADS and how to use it here. This is not the feature that I want to bring to your attention.

ADS is brilliant but using it requires some understanding and effort. To start with, we need to know the appropriate data sets to use for a specific configuration. For example:

Migrating Branding Data Using ADSs
Copying Kibana Dashboards Using ADS Definitions

Next, we need to create an ADS project, manually search for the configuration data in question, and include them for each data set.

A new productivity feature introduced in PeopleTools 8.59 enables data set designer pages to provide the ability to include data in ADS projects directly from the context of the configuration. What does this mean? This means that we can now create an ADS project and include data directly from certain configuration pages. I use the word ‘certain’ because this ‘Add to Project’ feature needs to be included (delivered by PeopleTools and Applications) in the configuration pages. At the time of writing, we can find the ‘Add to Project’ feature in Pivot Grid, Branding, Activity Guide, Managing Related Content, Event Mapping, Drop Zones, and Kibana configuration pages.

You want to see it to believe it, right? In this video, we can see how to include all configurations related to a couple of custom Kibana Dashboards into an ADS project.

The results? For starters, a very happy and productive configuration specialist!

We also end up with a nice ADS project with all the configuration data raring to go to the next environment!

In summary, using the ‘Add to Project’ feature will enable us to add data to ADS projects directly from the comfort of the configuration page. This also means that we can add-as-we-go! That is, we can add the configuration to ADS project(s) as we create them, instead of losing track of all the pieces and parts by the time we are done.

What are you waiting for? Upgrade to PeopleTools 8.59 to enjoy this and other great features.
