OHUG PeopleSoft HCM Roadmap session: Is PeopleSoft HCM a Modern HR System?

There is a lot of buzz in the HCM market around Modern HR systems. During OHUG, we wanted to make our Customers pause and think about that. What is a modern HR system? Is PeopleSoft HCM modern?

As you all know, PeopleSoft HCM has been in the market for more than 20 years. For some of you that could translate into PeopleSoft HCM being an old system.  We instead think of PeopleSoft HCM as a mature, proven and reliable system. PeopleSoft HCM has reinvented itself several times since its first release in 1987. Our products did not stand still. They needed to evolve and transform to respond to the challenging HR business needs.  Take a look at the 2013 American Payroll Association Prism Award. Each year, the American Payroll Association honors organizations based on best practice achievements in Technology, Management, Processes, Performance Study and Overall Best Practices. Three out of the five awards went to PeopleSoft HCM Customers (Hackensack University Medical Center, Capital One and Gap Inc). Also, HR Executive Magazine selected the 2013 CHRO of the year. The award went to Mark James, CHRO of Honeywell. Honeywell uses PeopleSoft HCM which has enabled Honeywell HR transformation process.

Do you use Microsoft Office? Microsoft Office first release (Office 1) came out in 1990. Do you think about Microsoft Office as an old product?  Office 1 is certainly “old”, the same way PeopleSoft HCM 7.5, 8.0 or 9.0 are “old” based on today’s standards. But the products did not stand still, they evolved and kept being  leaders in their space, even when you have other options.

So,  what is the definition of modern HR System? For us modern system implies the following characteristics:

- Easy to use
- Mobile
- Open and integrated
- Configurable and Customizable
- Contextual information/analytics
- Flexible and with low cost of maintenance

Most of you have already got visibility into the 9.2 release. You have seen that 9.2 has already moved the needle on these areas and started a paradigm shift. The 9.2  Release changed the way users interact with PeopleSoft HCM, making it simple to use through the use of Global Search, Search with facets, Related actions and Guided processes. Users get access to role-based workcenters and dashboards that are tailored to their needs, with embedded analytics that allow them to analyze information and take contextual action. All based on your role and respective security access.

With our 9.2 release we also introduced the new delivery model which includes delivering new functionality two to three times a year and making maintenance plus new functionality available through product update images that are cumulative. That means that if you are in 9.2 you can now take a look at the latest product image and decide what you want to deploy in your environment and when. You don’t have to take everything we deliver if you don’t want to, and you can selectively pick and choose what makes sense to your organization.

During OHUG we showed and demoed what we have delivered in the latest product images as well as what we are planning on delivering during the rest of this calendar year.  Several of the new applications and new capabilities to be delivered are being built with Peopletools 8.54 Fluid technology. The paradigm shift that started with 9.2 is now taking another dimension and completing the modernization of PeopleSoft HCM.  PeopleSoft Responsive and Fluid design allows PeopleSoft HCM to have applications that can be optimized for multiple devices - phone, tablet and desktop -. It doesn’t matter what size of monitor you have, or what type of tablet, or which phone. Our applications will render and adjust to the device you are using. Some of the applications we demoed at OHUG were: Mobile Approvals, Time and Absence Entry,  Manager Self Service with the new My Team View and Guided Self Service, Employee Self Service with new Personal data / profile self service capabilities.

What of these new capabilities or features would you like to uptake? With our new delivery model you can decide that. You can take one feature, a couple, everything or nothing. If you are on the most conservative side of the spectrum, you can decide not to take any of these new responsive/mobile applications and just take some the critical legislative changes your organization needs (e.g.: OFCCP, DOMA, or others).  If you are running PeopleSoft HCM in a private cloud model, you can have your service provider deploying and managing this for you.

So … Is PeopleSoft HCM a modern HR system? We are convinced the answer is YES!  And you have the power to decide if you want to modernize your PeopleSoft HCM environment.
