Four OpenSolaris Songbirds

Four OpenSolaris Songbirds had a nice get together in the OpenSolaris developer Summit May 2008. Steve also invited us to the Songbird office(Ken, sorry that we didn't find you in C1 :( ). It's a wonderful place, full of openness, flexibility and creation.

Songbird four

The Songbird talk went smoothly and great. I love this kind of teamwork talk and people focus on different parts of the talk. Steve led the talk in an easy and interactive way. Albert, Ken and I talked about the porting efforts, the extensions and feathers.

As the release of OpenSolaris 2008.05, it's a better approach to make Songbird into IPS repository first.

Comments:

Yeah! Can't wait to get this into IPS. :)

Hi,

Any idea _when_ we are getting Songbird into pkg.opensolaris.org ?

Thanks,
Edward.

Not sure, I'll try generating an IPS package when we release Songbird 0.6 in a couple of weeks.

We need the mp3 gstreamer plugin first. It's not in OpenSolaris 2008.05 yet.

Haik, the reason we don't have mp3 gstreamer plugin in OpenSolaris partly is because of the license issue: GPLed application+LGPLed gstreamer+mp3 plugin. There are several plan to workaround this:
1. Users can grab the mp3 plugin from fluendo shop(recommended for now).
2. There might have plan to provide some encumbered ips pkg in some repository(From Stephen Hahn's talk in C1).
3. A script might be provided to enable the download and install of mp3 plugin automatically(discussed in desktop dash discuss at opensolaris dot org).

Great job on Songbird. It installs flawlessly on OpenSolaris svn_93, but I have read a lot of forums/ chats, and they all state that Songbird has gstreamer support, but mine does not see my gstreamer installation. So, I was wondering in which directory does Songbird expect to find my gsteamers plug-ins? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Oh by the way I am using your 0.6.pkg package for OpenSolaris.

chris, currently some gstreamer plugins are missing in svn_93. You can get the mp3 decoder from fluendo webstore: https://shop.fluendo.com/product_info.php?products_id=40 for free. There is plan to provide much easier access for other codecs from OpenSolaris IPS in the future.

I was wondering what version of gstreamers you built Songbird against? I was also wondering were does Songbird expect to find the gstreamers plug-ins, /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/\* or some were else? I am asking so I can start to build plug-ins for gstreamers. Thanks.

For the latest OpenSolaris 2008.11, the GStreamer version is 0.10.21. You can just put the gstreamer-plugins to /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/ and it should work.
