Firefox 3.0.1 builds for Solaris/OpenSolaris are avaiable

The Firefox 3.0.1 builds are now available for download here. You can also join desktop dash discuss at opensolaris dot org to get the release notice. The printing should work for the builds.

Comments:

Looks like shit and works like shit.

The default theme sucks as compared to the official Sun FF2 package. Also, the google search does not work.

Could you please give more detail on the problems you've met?

Posted by alfred on July 22, 2008 at 06:51 AM CST #

I've noticed FF 3.0.1 stalling at times, while I was viewing mathml documents at http://pear.math.pitt.edu/mathzilla/ (look for sample mathml documents there, eg., see "http://pear.math.pitt.edu/mathzilla/Examples/markupOftheWeek.mhtml"). After I did a
truss -fvall -p FFpid
I noticed that it kept checking all of my font files frequently. I do have 2295 fonts installed (most from LaTex 'texlive' distribution) so that was taking some time.

.....

I believe that checking the same collection of font files is wasteful and it can be done much less frequently.

thanks

Works fine for me, including the Google Search Bar. Thanks, Alfred. The only issue I had with the 3.0 build (Google Maps wouldn't close the text column on the left when I clicked the "<<" symbol) is solved in 3.0.1.

As for Mr. 122.166.34.90 (aka ABTS-KK-Static-090.34.166.122.airtelbroadband.in) and his crappy attitude: nobody forcing you to use this pre-built package. Build your own Firefox, if you don't like what's available. Don't put down people who are helping the community!

Alfred,

I have been enjoying FX 3.0.1 for Solaris for weeks now. Thanks again for the build.

I would like to comment on the default Tango theme, however. It is really a marginal theme that is barely adequate, and certainly not very pleasing. Why couldn't the FX 3 Windows default theme (Strata) be used as the default?

In the meantime, the CrystalFox Qute theme is pretty good and stable, especially in conjunction with the CuteMenus - Crytal SVG extension.

Ofcourse I am very thankful to the team responsible for porting FF3.X to Solaris10.

I would like to mention one problem though relating to printing:

as soon as I use <Ctr>P or use the menus to print a web page, FF3.0.1 freezes completely.

A "truss -fvall -p FF3.0.1pid" show NO activity on any LWP/pthread. Alos I show that KBD/cursor input events are not sent / processed by FF3.0.1 at all. It is if the thread responsible for user interaction is completely stalled/locked up.

Again NO even is passed on to FF when cursor enters its window. In the past I could see ioctl() and other read()/write() to the X11 sockets getting active as events were passed on to FF3.0.1

I have the JavaPlugin for java "jdk1.6.0_06" ; when I use the latest java (jdk1.6.0_07) FF locks up soon after it is launced w/o reason.

I am using Solaris10 (latest patches/kernel/Gnome, etc.) on
Sun Ultra 20 M2 Workstation with 2GB RAM.

Thanks again for the good work. Do let me know if there is another place I should be reporting FF3.0.1 on Solaris problems.

sparcmaster, glad to know that it works for you. People usually prefer one theme over another, that's also the case for fonts. I'm still using the Tango theme for Firefox 3.0.1 on my Solaris Nevada box. It looks not bad as least to me:) Others might prefer the other themes. One good thing about Firefox is the customization ability. Users can choose the themes/extensions they like and customize Firefox in their own way.

Michael, there is an known issue for printing previously. The problem should have been fixed in the 3.0.1 build. The java plugin hasn't been tested yet. Any specific link that freezes your browser? The mail alias desktop dash discuss at opensolaris dot org could be a good place to report the issues.

Alfred,

My question was why the Strata theme used as default in FX 3 for Windows was not used as the default for the Solaris build. Was the Tango theme more stable in Solaris? Few would argue that the Tango theme is better than the Strata theme. Relatively few themes are available for FX 3, and thus a satisfactory default theme saves users much time in searching for one. The main problem with the Tango theme is that it does not use a 3d look for tabs.

At the beginning I've used the FF3.0.1 package and it was always crashing when trying to edit Preferences, with the following error:
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: libgailutil.so.17: open failed: No such file or directory
ld.so.1: firefox-bin: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/lib/firefox/components/libimgicon.so: symbol gnome_icon_theme_new: referenced symbol not found

The tarball works great though.
Thx

Basically, any time I try to print (CtrlP or menu) FF3.0.1 just freezes

sparcmaster, as you may notice, the Strata Aero theme is the default one for Vista and XP. And Tango is the default one for Solaris(Linux too as I remember). It's possible that Solaris bundles the Strata Aero theme for Firefox. But there might be some concerns from the UI design guys for this change. So I'd suggest to raise this as a bug in Mozilla community(http://bugzilla.mozilla.org) and please cc me in.

manos, I just tried the build on my Solaris 10 U5 SPARC box. The preference works fine. I have library libgailutil.so.17 in /usr/lib directory, from SUNWgnome-a11y-base-libs package. How is your box?

Michael, there were some known bugs for printing of Firefox 3.0 build. I think the bug has been worked around in Firefox 3.0.1(it works on my local box, x86/SPARC both). Seems that it's still partly broken. The root cause is in the Solaris printing side as we investigated. Two bugs have been created to track this issue: http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=62887&tstart=0.

Hi Alfred
The box is an old SunFire 100. It was running Solaris 8 for years until I've decided to try Solaris 10.
Anyway the library does not exist as I don't have this package installed, even though there are 184 SUNWgnome packages installed. I'll install the package and hopefully the problem will stop.
Thx

Hi,
thanks very much for this build. We deployed it to 2 Ultra-45's with 5.10 8/07
and it's working fine.

Thanks to all who helped out with the FF3.0.1 Ctrl-P freezing problem.

Removing
"/opt/sfw/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/printbackends/libprintbackend-papi.so"
solved this problem.

regards
Michael
