ECS electraSWITCH On Oracle SPARC T5: 5x Better Performance, Linear Scaling

ElectraCard Services, a MasterCard company, and Oracle recently conducted joint performance tests of electraSWITCH iTX on Oracle SPARC T-series servers with customer transaction mixes for Switching, ATM Transactions and Authorization Transactions. The measured results on the SPARC T5-4 were 5X better than previous results on the SPARC T4-4 showed near-linear scaling.

electraSWITCH 10 iTX from ElectraCard Services is a powerful payment processing application software that acquires, authenticates and routes financial transactions from multiple channels such as ATM, POS terminals, mobiles, IVR and kiosks to account management hosts, utility companies, service providers and interchanges such as MasterCard, Visa or domestic networks.

Oracle's SPARC T-servers running Oracle Solaris 11 are cost-effective, highly efficient cloud infrastructure platforms optimized to accelerate enterprise applications, delivering extreme performance and outstanding virtualization capabilities in a compact design.

The following three real world workloads were run to measure how well these combinations of hardware and software could perform while supporting a very high OLTP load.

100,000 ATMs Supported, Linear Scaling

The ATM Transaction Processing workload involves the processing of financial transactions from ATMs. The mode involved a mix of 70% ONUS (card is used in same Bank’s ATM) and 30% NOT-ONUS (card is used in other Bank’s ATM). For both of these types, mix of 70% Cash Withdrawal & 30% Balance Inquiry Transactions were used. Transactions were pumped at 2 TPM for each ATM.

The tests showed 4x to 5x better performance on T5 compared to T4 both in terms of throughput (TPS) as well as the number of ATM’s supported. The tests also showed linear scaling from 1 to 3 sockets.

Note: T5 : 16 Cores Per Socket , T4 : 8 Cores Per socket

Over 20,000 Switching Transactions Per Second

A switching transaction comprises of receiving the transactions from a network such as VISA or MasterCard, which may
include transactions coming from e-commerce, POS, ATM etc. Transactions coming from the network are calibrated in
Transactions Per Second (TPS) sustained by the source switch and to be routed to the target switch. This mode comes in
effect when the switch is not having any information about the issuer of the transaction and hence there is no validation
performed by the SWITCH.

The tests showed that the workload scaled linearly from 2 to 6 sockets on T5. There is also about 2.3x better switching
performance in terms of TPS on T5 compared to T4.

Issue Authorization

The issue authorization transaction is similar to the switching transaction where the transactions come from a network such as VISA or MasterCard, which may include transactions coming from e-commerce, POS, ATM etc. However here the switch possesses all the information about the issuer of the transaction and hence the SWITCH validates the transactions.

The tests showed 4x better performance on T5 compared to T4 both in terms of throughput (TPS)

T4 Configuration & Results

These tests demonstrate that the combination of ECS electraSWITCH and the Oracle SPARC T-Series hardware prove to be a highly reliable configuration offering excellent performance with highly consistent scalability and broad flexibility for single-site or multi-site enterprise implementations for customers. In addition, the scalability of ECS electraSWITCH on the SPARC platform can make it easier for an organization to accommodate more users or higher loads, with additional servers or CPU cores.
