New Oracle SPARC Cloud Services, Engineered Systems, and Servers

Oracle has announced major new additions to the SPARC platform that for the first time bring the advanced security, efficiency and simplicity of SPARC to the cloud. Built on the new SPARC S7 microprocessor, the latest additions to the SPARC platform include new cloud services, engineered systems and servers.

New Servers at Commodity Price Points

Oracle’s SPARC S7 server extends the platform into scale-out applications and cloud infrastructure while offering x86 commodity cost points. Its built-in efficiency, along with its hardwired data analytics accelerators, make the S7 particularly well-suited for today’s big data workloads, which increasingly incorporate artificial intelligence capabilities that enable the computer to interpret larger and larger data sets at deeper and deeper levels. The new processor allows for up to 10 times better, more efficient data analytics and machine learning than x86-based systems and their up to 1.7x better core efficiency than x86 systems lowers costs for running Java applications and databases.

A New Smaller Engineered System

Oracle MiniCluster S7-2 is an extremely simple and efficient engineered system designed to run enterprise databases and applications with uncompromising security. It was born from customer feedback asking for a smaller addition to the family, an extension of the SuperCluster into the midrange, Its small form factor make it an excellent choice for remote offices, small offices, and agile software development (DevOps) environments. It is ideal for highly security-sensitive applications, such as managing patient medical records, processing financial transactions, handling secure communications, running mission-critical enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications, and hosting security-related services.

SPARC Compute Now Available in the Oracle Cloud

The new Oracle SPARC Compute cloud service extends the SPARC platform to the Oracle Cloud. SPARC Compute delivers the unmatched simplicity, security and efficiency of SPARC through a dedicated public cloud service managed by Oracle. It extends Oracle’s comprehensive suite of SaaS, PaaS and IaaS cloud services and gives organizations the ability to deploy both SPARC and x86 workloads on a unified public cloud infrastructure – the Oracle Cloud.

Success Texas Style with SAS and Oracle SuperCluster DBaaS

The first US state to deliver a complete portfolio of citizen services in the Cloud, Texas is the leader in Open Government. With a "my government, my way" promise, Texas relies on Oracle to help 30+ agencies deliver services to nearly 30M citizens. It creates economies and efficiencies to deploy large frames that departments couldn’t otherwise afford.  Departments are seeing a reduction of 20-35% of costs by the move to the Cloud. Docker in the Zone with Oracle Solaris

After including a full distribution of OpenStack in Oracle Solaris 11.2 last year, Oracle recently announced plans to integrate Docker into Oracle Solaris. The integration will allow enterprise customers to use the Docker open platform to easily distribute applications built and deployed in Oracle Solaris Zones. Oracle also plans to make software including Oracle WebLogic Server available for development and testing as Docker images.

A majority of Oracle Solaris customers use Solaris Zones for its industry-leading scalability and efficiency, as well as comprehensive resource and security isolation, which is critical for enterprise class environments. Oracle Solaris Zones are also widely recognized as license boundaries for most enterprise applications, allowing customers to significantly lower costs.

Integrating Docker with Oracle Solaris Zones will bring a mature and proven container technology to Docker environments running in enterprise class clouds,” said Nick Stinemates, vice president of Business Development & Technical Alliances for Docker.

Oracle Software in Silicon Cloud provides developers a ready-to-run virtual machine environment to install, test, and improve their code in a robust and secure cloud platform powered by the revolutionary Software in Silicon technology in Oracle’s forthcoming SPARC M7 processor running Oracle Solaris.

Oracle Software in Silicon Cloud is available today and was introduced at Oracle OpenWorld by John Fowler in his keynote speech today. It is also featured in DEMOgrounds booth SC-170 in Moscone South.

The Oracle Solaris Remote Lab allows independent software vendors (ISVs) to test and qualify their applications in a self service Solaris cloud.

ISVs who are Oracle Partner Network Gold members with a specialization in the Solaris knowledge zone can apply for free access in OPN.

The lab offers the following features to it's users:

  • Lifetime of project: 45 days (extensions granted on demand) 
  • Up to 5 virtual machines in a private network 
  • Virtual Machine technology: Solaris zones 
  • Resources per VM
    • processor support: SPARC or x86 
    • OS version: OracleSolaris 11.0
    • 4GB physical memory 
    • 4GB swap space 
    • 10GB local filesystem storage 
    • 10GB network filesystem (NFS) mounted on all virtual machines
  • Networking configuration
    • The only external network routes are to Partner's other Virtual Machines
