Calculations Using Dates Stored in Planning

Planning allows users to enter date values in Planning. For example, a start date can be entered as 11/01/2013 if the format is MM/DD/YYYY. Although the values are entered in date format, it is possible to calculate values based on dates entered.

Grid Diagnostics Replaces MassGridStatistics

An earlier blog entry, https://blogs.oracle.com/pa/entry/planning_11_1_2_massgridstatistics, discussed the Planning 11.1.2.1 MassGridStatistics utility for displaying web form load times. Starting with the 11.1.2.2 release, MassGridStatistics has been replaced by the grid diagnostics functionality located with the Planning web interface.

Highlights of Planning 11.1.2.3 New Features

The latest release of Planning includes several performance improvements as well as some new features not present in earlier releases. Some highlights of the new features include:

  • “Member on the Fly” functionality – For Workforce Planning, Capital Asset Planning, Project Financial Planning and Public Sector Budgeting customers, Planning offers “member on the fly” functionality where end users can dynamically add sparse dimension members and use the added members on a form without performing a Planning refresh. The administrator determines how many new members can be added prior to the next regularly scheduled refresh. Below is an example on how to the “member on the fly’ functionality can be implemented:

Using Essbase Query Governors with Forms Containing User Variables

Many Planning customers today are designing forms containing user variables. User variables allow the user to customize the information presented on a form based on the user’s security. In addition, the number of forms maintained in the application is reduced since multiple versions of the same form having different dimension members do not need to be created.

Using Transaction Logging to Recover Post-Archived Essbase data

Data recovery is typically performed by restoring data from an archive.  Data added or removed since the last archive took place can also be recovered by enabling transaction logging in Essbase.  Transaction logging works by writing transactions to a log store.

Error java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: getNewTla using Oracle EPM products

Running into a Java out of memory error, it is very common behaviour in the field that the Java heap size will be increased. While this might help to solve a heap space out of memory error, it might not help to fix an out of memory error for the Thread Local Area (TLA). Increasing the available heap space from 1 GB to 16 GB might not even help in this situation.

Performance of Run Time Prompt Limits in Calc Manager

When using run time prompt limits in Calc Manager, performance is faster when using Essbase member list functions that are explicitly defined and accessed directly in Planning.[Read More]

Changing the Planning Language

If Essbase is set to a language other than English, the language should be changed in Planning to improve the stability of the Planning JVM during periods of heavy usage. In order to change the Planning language, open the setCustomParamsPlanning.bat (Windows) or SetCustomParamsPlanning.sh (Unix) located in the MIDDLEWARE_HOME/user_projects/epmsystem1/bin folder.[Read More]

EPM 11.1.2 - Service unavailable errors using EPM System

Users experience intermittent Service Unavailable errors using different components of the Oracle EPM System. A blank page with the following error message shows up:

                The service is unavailable.

Reviewing the application specific log files and testing the WebLogic application servers in the back end does not show any issues. As the client can still connect to the web server and the Java Application Server is working fine in the back end, it is clear that there is some issue in between web and application server. To track this down, logging for the WebLogic web server plug-in needs to be enabled. Setting up logging depends on the web server, so we need to distinguish between Internet Information Services (IIS) and Oracle HTTP Server (OHS).

EPM Planning 11.1.2 - MassGridStatistics

A utility is available for Oracle Hyperion Planning that determines web form load times.  This utility, MassGridStatistics, opens all web forms within the Planning application.  After the forms are opened, an html page will appear showing the form options, suppression, number of row column and page members, and load times.  Any form having a load time longer than one second could potentially have scalability issues in a multi-user environment and should be considered for re-design.  Adding suppression (especially block suppression) and reducing the number of rows and columns are potential fixes that will reduce load times.

The MassGridStatistics utility is located in a .7z file called MassGridStatistics.7z.  Extract the file using 7-Zip.  A readme file is provided listing the installation instructions and the steps to run the utility.

MassGridStatistics is included with the 11.1.2.1.101 patch set and will also be in all future releases starting with 11.1.2.2.  For earlier Planning releases, an SR will be necessary to have Support provide the utility.
