Using Transaction Logging to Recover Post-Archived Essbase data

Data recovery is typically performed by restoring data from an archive.  Data added or removed since the last archive took place can also be recovered by enabling transaction logging in Essbase.  Transaction logging works by writing transactions to a log store.

EPM 11.1.2 - EAS Jobs Taking Longer than 5 Minutes Launch Multiple Essbase Sessions

If a job initiated from EAS takes longer than 5 minutes, a new Essbase connection and a new Essbase session will be launched before the first session has completed.  An Essbase connection and a new session will be launched at 5 minute intervals while the job is running in Essbase, creating multiple sessions per job and unnecessarily creating a heavier load on the Essbase agent.

EPM 11.1.2 - Service unavailable errors using EPM System

Users experience intermittent Service Unavailable errors using different components of the Oracle EPM System. A blank page with the following error message shows up:

                The service is unavailable.

Reviewing the application specific log files and testing the WebLogic application servers in the back end does not show any issues. As the client can still connect to the web server and the Java Application Server is working fine in the back end, it is clear that there is some issue in between web and application server. To track this down, logging for the WebLogic web server plug-in needs to be enabled. Setting up logging depends on the web server, so we need to distinguish between Internet Information Services (IIS) and Oracle HTTP Server (OHS).

EPM 11.1.2 - Setting the Dynamic Calc property in Planning when using ERPI

The current release of ERPI has a limitation when dimension hierarchies are pulled in from Oracle EBS.  This limitation hard codes the storage property as a stored member and prevents defining the storage property as dynamic calc.  Planning applications typically set the Account and Period dimensions as dense, and parent members are typically set as dynamic calc members to reduce the block size and improve overall performance.  Therefore, it is typically best practice to set all upper level dense members as dynamic calc.

Beginning with the release, ERPI will be enhanced to allow member storage properties to be user defined.  For earlier releases, a workaround is available to prevent ERPI from setting member storage properties and use Planning to maintain the member storage properties instead.  The following is the trigger code for ERPI to enable this workaround:

OBIEE 11.1.1 - How to turn off EM centralized control

There is a flag in the central config file which can be used to turn off all of the EM central configuration. It is in user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain\config\fmwconfig\biee-domain.xml. The flag is near the top; it says: centralConfigurationEnabled="true" . If you change this to "false", then none of the config files will be modified centrally.

(You will need to restart the managed server and BI System Components)

Important Note: Turning off EM centralized control for managing BI config files is NOT recommended.

EPM 11.1.2 - SSL Offloading flavors

While EPM documentation clearly lists the different SSL flavors available in ( - termination at web server, ssl offloading, full ssl, 2 way ssl...), it requires additional information to adapt further depending on your environment.

Three main elements to know about:

  • Some EPM pages generate HTTPS links in their web pages based on request scheme. An http request will generate an http link, and an https request will generate an https link. This is the standard behavior of the request.getScheme servlet api method. The solution to let Weblogic know it has to use HTTPS in link is through a header named WL-Proxy-SSL true or false. This header has to be set by layers fronting Weblogic.
  • The Weblogic plugin (in Oracle Http Server, or IIS) has 2 parameters to add or propagate this header: WLProxySSL and WLProxyPassThrough and

quoting from above url: When WLProxySSL is set to ON, the location header returned to the client from WebLogic Server specifies the HTTPS protocol.

If you have a chained proxy setup, where a proxy plug-in or HttpClusterServlet is running behind some other proxy or load balancer, you must explicitly enable the WLProxyPassThrough parameter. Enabling this parameter allows the plug-in to trust the proxy fronting it, under the assumption that the network between them is trusted so user certs and so forth can be passed along.

This also means the WL-Proxy-SSL header amongst other headers are not going to be removed by the weblogic plugin when it receives headers from SSL Offloader.
