Oracle ACE sessions at Oracle OpenWorld

Icing on the Cake: Oracle ACE sessions at Oracle OpenWorld

As you're finalizing your Oracle OpenWorld travel plans and taking advantage of schedule builder to plan your week in San Francisco, make sure you add some Oracle ACE sessions to your schedule.

"What's an Oracle ACE?" you ask. Members of the Oracle ACE Program are the most active members of the Oracle community, frequently sharing their substantial insight and real-world expertise with Oracle technologies through articles, blogs, social networks, and as presenters at Oracle OpenWorld and other live events.

With so many great sessions at this year's event, building your schedule can involve making a lot of tough choices. But you'll find that the sessions led by Oracle ACEs will be the icing on the cake of your Oracle OpenWorld content experience.

The list below includes Oracle ACE sessions at Oracle OpenWorld, JavaOne (**) and MySQL Connect (*) . Find session descriptions and schedules in the content catalog. Dig in!

Are You Kidding Me? (Make That 164) Oracle ACE Sessions at Oracle OpenWorld

It's all set; Oracle OpenWorld 2011 sessions are finalized and the content catalog is open to the world.

Take note: 163 of these sessions will involve at least one Oracle ACE. (Yes, you read that number right!) In some cases, Oracle ACEs are presenting on multiple occasions, with Lucas Jellema's six sessions taking the prize in this category. (Really, Lucas? When will you have time to eat and sleep?)

We're especially proud of the "new blood" in this crowd - for example, MySQL honchos Ronald Bradford, Sheeri Cabral, Giuseppe Maxia, and Sarah Novotny are all in the mix.

The complete list is shown below; of course you can find session descriptions and timing in the content catalog itself. Congratulations to all our Oracle ACE speakers!

Oye! Help Build OTN America Latina!/OTN America Latina Tour

You don't often get a chance to shape the direction of a technical comunidad

Well, OTN American Latina is just starting up. If you're a techie who speaks Spanish or Portuguese, or if you just like hanging out with techies latinoamericanos (and who doesn't?), here's how to get in on the fun:

And here are the sites themselves:

If you're not sure which site to visit, just remember that Brazilian Portuguese is Spanish spoken with a little body English.

What's more, in July, Oracle ACE Directors Arup Nanda, Ronald Bradford, Debra Lilly, Muralli Valath, and others will join Oracle-employee database gurus Tom Kyte, Graham Wood, and Kuassi Mensah for a speaking tour of Latin/South America user groups. The whole spiel is organized by ACE Director Francisco Munoz Alvarez, who was instrumental in jump-starting new UGs in Chile and elsewhere in 2009. In Francisco's words:

Three years ago, when speaking in some conferences around the world with some of my fellows Oracle ACE Directors, I discovered that no one ever heard of Latin American OUGs. So I decided to bring international Oracle speakers to the region for the first time (in April 2009), and then on the first OTN Tour in 2010. After this great experience I helped found the LAOUC (The Latin American Oracle Users Community) with the help of other fellow friends and a new dream came to life!

If you are in the region do not miss this great opportunity to network and learn from some of the great experts in the Oracle community. The cities & dates are:

  • San Jose, Costa Rica – July 5
  • Quito, Ecuador – July 8
  • Cartagena de Indias, Colombia – July 11
  • Lima, Peru – July 13
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil – July 16
  • Montevideo, Uruguay – July 19
  • Santiago, Chile – July 22

You can find information about this tour in Spanish and Portuguese.

I had a chat on camera a few weeks ago for an OPN "PartnerCast", which luckily enough was designed to provide and overview of the Oracle ACE program for Oracle partners. Watch it on demand below; don't I look good in blue?

Oracle ACEs Invade Kscope11!

Kscope11 (June 26-30, Long Beach, Calif.), ODTUG's annual conference bringing together the best Oracle minds in the industry, will include more than 50 Oracle ACE & ACE Director presentations this year. Not only will Oracle ACEs be presenting technical content, but they will also be leading full-day symposia and and hands-on training, as well as participating in the Kscope special events - such as the OTN-sponsored "Lunch and Learn" on June 28, where ACEs will lead lunchtime panel sessions covering topics such as BI, Oracle Fusion Middleware, APEX and more.

We challenge you to attend Kscope11 and not run into an Oracle ACE! See you there!

IOUC Summit: Open Arms and Cheese Shoes

Last week's International Oracle User Group Committee (IOUC) Summit at Oracle HQ was a high point of the past year, for a number of reasons:

  • A "quorum" of Java User Group leaders, several Java Champions among them, were in attendance (Bert Breeman, Stephan Janssen, Dan Sline, Stephen Chin, Bruno Souza, Van Riper, and others), and it was great to get face time with them. Their guidance and advice about JavaOne and other things are always much appreciated.

  • Mix in some Oracle ACE Directors (Debra Lilley, Dan Morgan, Sten Vesterli, and others), and you really have the making of a dynamic group. Stephan describes it best: "We (the JUG Leaders) discovered that behind the more formal dress code the ACE directors are actually as crazy as we are." (See link below for more.)

  • Thanks to Bert's (NLJug) kindness, I am now the proud owner of a bonafide, straight-from-the-NL cheese shoe. How the heck did he get this through security?

I suggest that you also read more robust reports from Stephan, Arun Gupta, and of course "Team Stanley."

Congrats to the Oracle ACE Director of the Year...

Francisco Munoz Alvarez (AKA @fcomunoz)!

We can't explain the reasons any better than Oracle Magazine, the sponsor of this award:

When it comes to learning something new, Francisco Munoz Alvarez doesn't look for a teacher; he looks for someone who has a problem.

"One of the best ways to learn is by helping others," says Alvarez. "When someone has a problem on an OTN [Oracle Technology Network] forum, I enjoy trying to assist them with it. I've learned a lot by trying to help other Oracle users to solve their problems."

Over the years, he has learned enough to become an Oracle ACE, an Oracle ACE Director, and now Oracle Magazine's Oracle ACE Director of the Year. Alvarez is also the founder and CEO of Database Integrated Solutions.

For Alvarez, learning--and helping others--takes legwork. This year, as an Oracle ACE director, he has appeared at 22 conferences in 18 countries, where he not only gives talks but takes the time to answer questions and assist users with complex Oracle challenges. In addition, he frequently helps his blog visitors (about 25,000 per month) solve difficult Oracle-related problems.

Given that he's also president of the New Zealand and Chilean Oracle user groups and the Latin American Oracle User Group, Alvarez' energy seems to have no limits when it comes to the Oracle community. He himself puts it best: "I never get tired of helping people learn how to share their knowledge and experience."

Francisco is also the main organizer of the Latino America OTN Tour 2010, in which he and Oracle ACE Directors such as Hans Forbrich, Dan Morgan, Ronald Bradford, and Dan Prusinski will join Tom Kyte and others in a 7-country speaking tour.

Congrats, Francisco, you deserve it!
