Top 10 OTN Tech Articles for 2012

It takes a special kind of IT pro to risk additional carpal tunnel damage to pound out a technical article after spending the day wrestling with a keyboard in dealing with other duties. That kind of dedication is noteworthy, even more so if people actually take the time to read the resulting article. So if you know any of the authors listed below, skip the handshake and give them a congratulatory slap on the back for all that time spent torturing their tendons. Their hard work has earned a place on this list of  the Top 10 most popular OTN articles published in 2012.

  1. Getting Started with Java SE Embedded on the Raspberry Pi
by Bill Courington and Gary Collins
  2. How Dell Migrated from SUSE Linux to Oracle Linux
by Jon Senger, Aik Zu Shyong, and Suzanne Zorn
  3. Exploring Oracle SQL Developer
    by Przemyslaw Piotrowski
  4. Getting Started with Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 2
    by Lenz Grimmer
  5. How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder
    by Mark Heckler
  6. How to Use Oracle VM VirtualBox Templates
    by Yuli Vasiliev
  7. How to Update Oracle Solaris 11 Systems From Oracle Support Repositories
    by Glynn Foster
  8. Tips for Hardening an Oracle Linux Server
by Lenz Grimmer and James Morris
  9. How To Configure Browser-based SSO with Kerberos/SPNEGO and Oracle WebLogic Server
    by Abhijit Patil
  10. How to Create a Local Yum Repository for Oracle Linux
    by Jared Greenwald

Of course, OTN has a great many articles covering a broad range of topics of interest to Java developers, DBAs, sysadmins, solution architects, and everybody else who works keeping the IT world running. You'll find them here. If you have suggestions for topics or technologies you'd like to see covered, please let us know.

And if you have insight and expertise to share, why not write your own article? Click here to learn how to get published on OTN.

Re-post: Two JavaFX Community Rock Stars Join Oracle

from Sharat Chander, Director - Java Technology Outreach:

These past 24+ months have proved momentous for Oracle's stewardship of Java. A little over 2 years ago when Oracle completed its acquisition of Sun, a lot of community speculation arose regarding Oracle's Java commitment. Whether the fears and concerns were legitimate or not, the only way to emphatically demonstrate Oracle's seriousness with moving Java forward was through positive action.

In 2010, Oracle committed to putting Java back on schedule whereby large gaps between release trains would be a thing of the past. And in 2011, that promise came true. With the 2011 summer release of JDK 7, the Java ecosystem now had a version brought up to date. And then in the fall of 2011, JavaFX 2.0 righted the JavaFX ship making rich internet applications a reality.

Similar progress between Oracle and the Java community continues to blossom. New-found relationship investments between Oracle and Java User Groups are taking root. Greater participation and content execution by the Java community in JavaOne is steadily increasing. The road ahead is lit with bright lights and opportunities.

And now there's more good news to share. As of April 2nd, two recognized JavaFX technology luminaries and "rock stars" speakers from the Java community are joining Oracle on a new journey. We're proud to have both Jim Weaver and Stephen Chin joining Oracle's Java Evangelist Team. You'll start to see them involved in many community facing activities where their JavaFX expertise and passion will shine. Stay tuned!

Welcome @JavaFXpert and @SteveonJava!

Oracle OpenWorld Latin America: Focus on JavaOne

Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne Latin America was last week and there were lots of videos and podcasts recorded there. Here are some of the highlights (add your favorites in the comments, please):

The JavaOne Community Keynote

The JavaOne Community Keynote was informative and funny. (Thanks to Loiane Groner for taping it!) The discussion ranged from the top 5 developments in Java in 2012, to women in technology, to how to brew coffee with Java (done on stage), to the announcement of jDuchessBR for Brazilian women using Java, to what developers do when they aren't coding. (in Brazilian Portuguese). Don't miss  the video used to conclude the keynote, an improvement of the "Code Hard" video entitled "The Real Java Developers."

OTN Interviews
I interviewed Java Experts, including Fabiane Nardon (Java EE), Loiane Groner (Java and Javascript), Jim Weaver (JavaFX) and Geertjan Weilenga (NetBeans). Yara Senger also interviewed her 80 year-old grandmother about her use of Java as a physicist. Those videos are now on Youtube/Java (look under Recent Activity). Another nice video from the OTN Lounge is this short discussion on why and how Juliano Viana works on Java EE 6 with LogicStyle's customers and how he uses GlassFish.

Java Spotlight Podcasts

The Java Spotlight Podcast Episode 60: Live from JavaOne Latin America includes an interview with Yara and Vinicius Senger on Global Code's 10th Anniversary, and with Mike Lehmann, Oracle senior director of product management, providing insight on the Weblogic 12c release. If you like your podcasts deeply technical, listen to this Java Spotlight Podcast with Alan Bateman on NIO2 APIs in JDK 7. There's nothing like the engineer working on a project to get into the technical details.

Thanks to all the developers in Latin America that made JavaOne Latin America such a success!

The Oracle Technology Network (meaning me) will be at Devoxx next week doing interviews with Java experts. Do you have technical questions about Project Jigsaw, JavaFX or Java on MacOS? Take a look at the list below of experts and topics. Leave your questions as a comment on this blog and I'll do my best to include them. Most of the interviews happen Tuesday, so get you questions in quickly. Thanks!
