Virtual Developer Day: Hands-on Database App Development (May 15) - with Big Data and Cloud Sessions

We have just opened registration for the newest edition of Virtual Developer Day: Hands-on Oracle Database 11g Application Development. This experience comes to you online on May 15, in the Americas TZ-friendly time of 9am-1pm PT.

In this workshop you'll learn the key tools, frameworks, techniques, and best practices for building database-backed applications through presentations and hands-on labs (which you can download and save) demonstrating innovative and performance-enhancing methods - all from your desk! Oracle experts will be on hand to answer your questions via real-time chat.

As you can see from the agenda below, the day will include sessions on using Oracle NoSQL Database, using Oracle Database alongside Hadoop, as well as the forthcoming Database Cloud Service. Something for everyone!

Get on board, time is tight!

The Return of "Easy": Oracle Database 11g Express Edition

We don't usually make a big deal about new product releases. But this one is an exception.

Oracle Database XE, which was initially based on Oracle Database 10g Release 2 code when it was released in 2007, was a major success in introducing Oracle Database technology to new users. It was easy to install, easy to manage, and easy to build lightweight Web apps with. And, no small thing, it was free (gratis) - to use or distribute.

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Express Edition, now available, picks up where the previous release left off. For a quick summary, see this TechCast we recently recorded during the Beta period with Kris Rice, XE's chief architect:

We think you'll enjoy the "easy" ethos of this new release as much as you did with the previous one. Plus, you'll get an introduction to Oracle Database 11g Release 2 features such as Universal Connection pooling - see here for a full list.  Note that the storage limit has increased to 11GB (from 4 GB) as well.

Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Beta - Feedback Needed!

Generally speaking we do not post product-oriented news here, but this particular news is so closely tied to the OTN community that we can't resist.

You've waited patiently, and now that patience pays off: the Oracle Database 11g Express Edition (XE) Beta release is here. Download it and give us your feedback today!

Just as you expect, Oracle Database 11g XE brings you an entry-level, small-footprint RDBMS based on the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 code base that's free to develop on, deploy, and distribute. It's a great way to get started with 11g Release 2 features like Edition-Based Redefinition!

If you want to revisit what those features are, Arup Nanda's "Top Features" series is a great way to go!

Hot: Pre-built Developer VMs from OTN

perfect-pancakes.jpg
For those of you who haven't already played with it, Oracle VM VirtualBox is an awfully cool desktop virtualization tool. Even better, it's free.

We OTN-ers like it even more than you will though because it allows us to freeze-dry entire software stacks into VM images. Developers can simply download a few files, assemble them with a script we provide, and then import and run the resulting pre-built VM in VirtualBox. Voila, instant (insert name here) stack.

These VMs are particularly handy in support of in-person workshops, but there's no reason we can't make them available for everyone. Which we have done, in Java, database, and SOA/BPM flavors. (All "ingredients" are listed at the referenced link, and they are extensive.)

Now that we have the kinks worked out, other flavors are sure to become available in 2011.

Now go get 'em!
