Best of OTN - Week of October 12th

It Doesn't Get Better Than This

According to a post on his DBA On Tap blog, Oracle ACE Associate Danny Bryant reports that he is frequently asked, "What do you get for being an ACE?"

He provides an answer, but then goes on to explain that maybe that's the wrong question. He suggests that those people ask, "What's in it for me?"

Danny then goes on to give three terrific examples of what the Oracle ACE program can mean to an individual, to a private sector business, or to a public sector organization.

So for this week's edition of Best of OTN, we think it doesn't get any better than Danny's post -- and his attitude.

Take a moment to read his post and see for yourself. Oracle ACE: What's in it for Me?

OTN Virtual Technology Summit - New Content coming in November!

How can you use Oracle technology to meet today’s IT challenges? Find out at the Virtual Technology Summit (VTS). Hear from Oracle ACEs, Java Champions, and Oracle product experts as they share their insight and experience in meeting those challenges.  We are offering three chances to watch and interact with Oracle and community experts.  Register Now by clicking one of the links below!

This interactive, online event, sponsored by the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), offers four technical tracks, each with a unique focus on specific tools, technologies, and tips:

The Database Track

In this new data-driven world, database administrators have the opportunity to evolve and enhance their IT service delivery models. Database developers can harness new sources of data to build more-sophisticated applications. This track will offer two focus areas—advanced database administration techniques and data-driven application development for database developers. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Develop database services more efficiently
  • Facilitate the development of data-driven applications

Products covered will include Oracle Database, Oracle Multitenant, Oracle Database In-Memory, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle NoSQL Database, MySQL, and database development tools.

The Java Track

Java continues to offer more functionality. How can you keep up? Attend this event. We’ll provide code-laden training on how to:

  • Implement solutions using the latest Java EE features
  • Use lambdas and the new streams library API
  • Tune your Java applications for high performance

The Middleware Track

Mobile device sales continue to increase, and smartphones and tablets are quickly replacing desktop and laptop computers. This track has two focus areas—mobile application development and mobile architecture. Participants will learn how to use essential tools and technologies for developing a successful mobile solution. Products covered will include the Oracle Mobile Application Framework, Oracle Mobile Suite, Oracle Mobile Cloud, Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, Oracle SOA Suite, and Oracle Service Bus.

The Systems Track

Provisioning has always been a deployment challenge. How do you accomplish that rapidly and reliably without losing the flexibility to accommodate changing needs in your datacenter? This track will feature hands-on labs to help you become familiar with two provisioning models that fit those requirements:

  • Oracle VM Templates
  • OpenStack cloud management platform

View the full agenda, abstracts, and participation instructions on the VTS Event Resources Community Space.

Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne OTN Interviews - Part 1

Oracle OpenWrold and JavaOne 2014 are over and the OTN Community Managers are busy editing TONS of video they took with Oracle experts and community members at the events. This week's best of will focus on the Java and Architect Community videos posted so far. Next Friday we will focus on the Database and Systems Communities.

Architect Community

From OTN Architect Community Manager Bob Rhubart

During Oracle OpenWorld 2014 I spent most of my time in the OTN Lounge recording 2 Minute Tech Tips, as presented by a small army of architects and developers. The premise is simple: each person has to beat the clock to deliver an interesting tech tip before the countdown timer runs down. All of the participants were great sports, and putting these videos together involved a lot of laughter. The three videos below are just a sample of the more than 28 Tech Tip videos now available -- and more are on the way!

Click here for more 2 Minute Tech Tip Videos.

Java Community

From OTN Java Sr. Community Manager Tori Wieldt

JavaOne 2014 I spent most of my time in the Java Hub recording video. Below is just a sample of what is to come, more is on the way!
  • Java ME and ProSyst Software
Dr. Dimitar Valtchev, CTO of ProSyst Software, discusses Java ME and working with small devices with Java ME. Live from JavaOne, by Tori Wieldt of the Oracle Technology Network..
  • IoT Dev Challenge Student Winners: ePot
JavaOne interview with the student winners of the OTN IoT Developer Challenge.
  • JavaFX and ObjectWheel
Mike Tallent, CEO of ObjectWheel, discusses using drag-and-drop to create UIs with ObjectWheel. Live from JavaOne, by Tori Wieldt of the Oracle Technology Network..
