Prepare to Migrate Your Database to Oracle Cloud

Oracle provides various methods and tools to migrate an on-premises database to Oracle Cloud.

The migration is simplified because Oracle Database Cloud Service offers the same standards, functionality and products as Oracle’s on-premises database.  This reduces the capital expenditure, operations cost, and provisioning time.

Knowing how to migrate your database to the cloud, planning the migration, and understanding the factors that influence the selection of a migration strategy are critical.

Why Migrate to Oracle Cloud?

Oracle Cloud enables the development, extension, connection and security of cloud applications, along with data sharing.

Benefits of migrating to the cloud include: quick deployments, flexibility, scalability, increased productivity with lower costs and enhanced security features.

More importantly, Oracle products work better on Oracle Cloud.

Management of the database is straightforward in the cloud. In a few steps, you can provision and start using your database in the cloud.

Traditional or On-Premises Oracle Cloud

* Specify and procure hardware

* Request database deployment via the Cloud
* Configure hardware * Adjust capacity as demand changes
* Deploy hardware * Not applicable
* Add hardware and reconfigure stack as demand grows * Not applicable
* Deploy database * Not applicable
* Manual scheduling of backups * Automatic scheduling of backups
* Manual database recovery * Automated recovery using Database Services console
* No by default encryption * Default encryption for user-defined tablespaces

What Can Be Migrated to Oracle Cloud?

You can migrate a Standby Database, Non-Production Database, Production Database, non-CDB Databases, CDB Databases, Pluggable Databases, Tablespace, Schemas, and Objects to Oracle Cloud.

How to Migrate Your Database to Oracle Cloud?

There are various ways to migrate on-premises databases to Oracle Cloud. Some of them are:

  • Using Database Backup Cloud Service
  • Data Guard Physical Standby
  • Cloning a Remote PDB or Non-CDB
  • Transportable Tablespace / Database
  • Data pump import and export
  • Plugging in a Non-CDB

Planning Your Migration

The following are points to consider when planning your migration:

  • Discovery: check database version, size, OS, endian, DB links and business dependencies
  • Analysis: identify and classify all objects, installed options, compression and partitioning, invalid objects
  • Planning: check cloud readiness and develop a migration plan
  • Migration: perform database migration by using the appropriate migration strategy as per the requirement
  • Validation: validate migrated objects and row counts

How to Choose a Cloud Migration Strategy

There are multiple factors which should be taken in to consideration before you start the migration.

Your migration strategy will depend on the following:

  • Data Size: knowing the size of the data will help determine which shape of the deployment is required for the migration
  • Application Down Time: straight forward migration strategy may not provide the benefits of minimal outage. To address this issue, you can take advantage of an advanced migration method that uses Data Guard or Golden Gate
  • Network Connectivity: FastConnect can be used to migrate to Oracle Cloud. It offers improved speed and security compared to migrating data over the Internet
  • Business Criticality: to maintain the availability of the production databases, pre-production and dev or testing databases must be migrated to Cloud first
  • Data Complexity: some migration methods have limitations for particular data types, which should be taken into consideration before selecting the migration strategy

Extend Your DBA Skills to the Cloud

With a move to the cloud, Oracle DBAs will need to rely on their existing core skills, as well as extend their skill set depending on the deployment options and specific Oracle Database Cloud service that is used.

Furthermore, cloud DBAs will also need to develop an understanding of some new tools.
