New Features for Oracle Database 18c Multitenant

Diana Gray
Sr. Principal Curriculum Product Manager

A multitenant container database is a great invention because it can hold many pluggable databases. An existing database can simply be adopted with no application changes required.

Oracle Database Release 18c includes the fourth major release of Oracle Multitenant and features number of enhancements. Oracle Multitenant fully complements other options, including Oracle Real Application Clusters and Oracle Active Data Guard.

Learn more about these new features in the Oracle Multitenant: New Features white paper, but here is a summary:

  • Refreshable PDB Switchover
    • The refreshable PDB switchover capability makes it possible to create and maintain replicas on a per-PDB basis with only two CDBs to manage
  • Enhanced Integration with Data Guard
    • Before 18c, certain forms of PDB creation could be complicated. This new release simplifies PDB provisioning operations in high availability configurations, protected by Oracle Data Guard
  • Snapshot Carousel
    • The snapshot carousel is a repository for periodic point-in-time copies of a PDB. This feature was designed for development environments that typically require multiple copies of databases at different points in time. The default maximum number of snapshots that can be retained is eight
  • Dynamic Lockdown Profiles
    • Changes to Lockdown Profiles are now dynamically propagated to all applicable PDBs, without the need to restart either PDB or CDB. The concept is to create a few “isolation stencils” centrally. There may just be one, which would apply to all PDBs
  • CDB Fleet Management
    • A CDB Fleet is a group of CDBs managed collectively. Since its introduction in 12.1, Multitenant has helped reduce operating costs by managing many PDBs as one. CDB Fleet extends this advantage by allowing many CDBs to be managed as one

Ready to learn more about Oracle Multitenant?

Oracle University offers courses about Oracle Database 18c, and multitenant-architecture topics are included. Consider signing up for one or more of the following courses:

Oracle Database 18c: New Features for Administrators

This course provides an overview of the Oracle Database 18c new features and enhancements related to multitenant architecture, security, RMAN, general database areas, performance, data warehousing and sharding.

Oracle Database 18c: Administration Workshop

This course provides you with a firm foundation in administration of an Oracle database. In this course, you will gain a conceptual understanding of the database and its multitenant architecture and learn how to manage an Oracle database in an effective and efficient manner.

Oracle Database 18c: High Availability New Features

You will learn about new software features and improvements found in Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM, Real Application Clusters, and Oracle Data Guard.

Oracle Database 18c: Managing Multitenant Architecture

During this four day course you will gain a conceptual understanding of the multitenant architecture and learn how to manage an Oracle multitenant container database (CDB) and its different types of pluggable databases (PDB) in an effective and efficient manner.

Another great way to learn about Oracle Database 18c and multitenant architecture is to sign up for the Oracle Database New Features Learning Subscription, which gives you one full year of continuous database training for a reasonable price.

This is a great way to learn how to leverage the enhancements in multitenant. Check it out!
