Wanted: Certified Java Experts

Considering how hot Java is these days, getting Java certified can be a powerful addition to your resume.  With companies highly valuing certification during the hiring process, here are some of the reasons you should consider pursuing one of the most highly recognized and valued credentials in the industry.

So much Java - so few experts.

Java is still the # 1 developer platform in the world. Java is everywhere and it keeps growing, with 97% of enterprise desktops, 115 million TV devices and 3 billion mobile phones now running Java.  Recent surveys given to hiring managers and recruiters have validated the huge demand for skilled developers in the marketplace. More specifically, for skilled Java developers.

If you're still deciding whether it's worthwhile to earn a Java Certification, here are a few interesting facts about the demand for Java developers - cited from top labor and technical sources:

  • Dice.com: "More than 1 in 5 of the 77,000 jobs posted on Dice contained some mention of the need for Java know-how."
  • Jobstock.com: "The Java development skill set is a highly valued IT skills set in strong demand globally."
  • US Bureau of Labor Statistics: "Employment of software developers is projected to grow 30% from 2010 to 2020."
  • E-Skills: "The top technical skills demanded by employers over the past year include: Java..."

Certification is a differentiator in the job market.

In a 2011 CompTIA survey, 86% of hiring managers indicated that IT certifications are a "medium" to "high" priority during the candidate evaluation process. Keep in mind that certification is not only a validation of the skills you possess; it also demonstrates your dedication to skill development and professional growth - a big plus to a hiring manager.

Java certifications help you develop a well-rounded skill set.

Preparing for a certification not only helps you address knowledge gaps; it helps you become more productive in your job. Certification tests you on a broad range of skills related to a specific technology area. Exam topics are an effective way to brush up on concepts you may have forgotten about or haven't applied in recent years.

The net result: better coding skills, higher productivity and greater performance.

Certification can help you advance your career and potentially earn more.

Of the 700 network professionals surveyed by Network World and SolarWinds in 2011, 74% indicated that certifications led to promotions, new jobs or pay raises.  Although earning a Java certification "alone" won't be your magic ticket to wealth and fame, combining it with productive experience shows prospective companies and clients that you're able to put your in-depth knowledge and skills to good use.

The 2013 Salary Guide from Robert Half International also shows that developers with Java expertise earn 9% more than the national average. Furthermore, the 2012 IT Skills and Certification Pay Index from Foote Partners named the Oracle Certified Master, Java Enterprise Architect Certification one of the most profitable certifications in the industry.

Conclusion: it does pay to know Java.

Take the first step; earn a Java Certification from Oracle University.

Java certifications are now available for Java SE 5, Java SE 6, Java SE 7, Java EE 5 and Java EE 6. New certifications will be released soon after the release of Java EE 7.

Are You Ready for the Brave New Cloud World?

Cloud computing is being embraced by more organizations worldwide, both large and small.  As growth predictions emerge, we're seeing a clearer picture about what the near future of IT will look like.

•   Market Trends says that Software as a Service (SaaS) and cloud-based business application services will grow from $13.4 billion in 2011 to $32.2 billion in 2016, a five-year CAGR of 19.1%.

•    Gartner is predicting Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), cloud management & security devices and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) are growing from $7.6B in 2011 to $35.5B in 2016, a CAGR of 36%.

Impact of Cloud on Jobs

Despite this tremendous growth, finding IT professionals with the right skills is proving to be a challenge for hiring managers. Here are some more stats to wrap your head around:

According to IDC:

- “Cloud-related skills represent virtually all of the growth opportunities in IT worldwide and will grow by 26% annually through 2015.”

- “ …IT managers consistently report that while the  economy represents a challenge to filling cloud-related positions, finding applicants with the appropriate expertise, certification or training is a much bigger issue.”

So even though you might not feel an immediate need to become a cloud expert, given these trends, it's a good idea to start thinking about developing skills that will be in demand in the near future.

Developing Cloud-Ready Skills

So which skill areas do you need to develop to position yourself for success in this brave new cloud world?

•   Enterprise architecture – Becoming an expert to drive the design and implementation for the cloud solution will be a must.

•   Application development – In a cloud world, this means knowing how to build high performing, cloud-enabled applications that can be accessed from anywhere, at any time.

•   System administration – This role is definitely not going away, but it's definitely evolving from its traditional sense. The new focus will be on network, OS, virtualization and application administration.

•    Network security – Security is named as one of the top concerns with cloud. Securing the cloud network will be a key area where resources will be required.

•    Data integration and analysis – Cloud is helping to create a data explosion that requires expertise in designing and managing analytical systems and processes that have big data in mind.

•    Project management - Given the complexity that comes with cloud transformations, possessing solid project management skills will be critical.

Is Oracle Cloud on Your Horizon?

If your organization is considering a transition to Oracle Cloud products or services, then it would be logical to consider training for Java development and architecture, OS administration and virtualization, to name a few. We also recommend exploring training on Oracle's cloud technology to give yourself an edge in an ever-changing IT marketplace.

Which Skills Are Critical for the Cloud-Enabled World?

In the face of all of these changes, which other skills are essential for organizations to have on staff to support a successful cloud transformation?

Let us know what you think in the comments below.
