Application Containers is an exciting new feature available in Oracle Database 12c R2.
Why is it important?
It goes one step further than the 12c R1 Multitenant feature, which in itself was a radical new feature that for the first time allowed DBAs to have multiple databases running in just one Database instance (a bit like the way you only have to open the Microsoft Word application once but you can work with multiple Word documents). This saved DBAs a lot of time and effort in installing, patching and upgrading databases.
BUT...with Multitenant, even though you could have multiple databases running on one instance, you still needed to duplicate any Application and 'read-only data' across each database, so there was still a lot of duplicate effort for DBAs in installing, patching and upgrading applications.
NOW... with Application Containers, you are able to install an Application just ONCE and share the application, as well as whole read-only tables, across multiple different user audiences. So Application containers make the DBA's life even easier because if further reduces the time and effort spent installing, upgrading, and patching applications, as well as potentially saving substantial storage.
