NexGen Cloud Conference recap: “All Roads Lead to the Cloud”

Last week, San Diego hosted The Channel Company’s inaugural NexGen Cloud Conference & Expo on December 3-5. The theme, “All Roads Lead to the Cloud” – stemmed from industry experts’ predictions that all channel businesses must adapt to the cloud by 2017.

Oracle participated in the event as a Platinum sponsor throughout the conference. Wednesday was a “hosted” day with about 120 invite-only solution providers, providing Oracle an opportunity to engage with partners through the following events:

  • Oracle Cloud Opportunities keynote – Oracle Director Jeff Porter’s keynote was very well received by partners; we even heard feedback that it was the best Oracle keynote attendees had listened to at an XChange event!
  • Power Talk sessions – Oracle hosted five roundtable meetings with solution providers on dedicated topics that ranged from Virtualization to Private and Public Clouds. The intimate setting led to lively discussions, and an opportunity for partners to get their latest questions answered.
  • NexGen Welcome Reception – The official NexGen Conference kicked off Wednesday night and afforded eager Solution Providers an opportunity to network and mingle with Oracle executives, discussing Oracle’s planned cloud opportunities at our table top display.

On Thursday and Friday, Oracle hosted a booth in the Expo Hall and the highlight was certainly the evening booth crawl where the Oracle team served up local favorites - fish tacos and Corona!

All in all, the NexGen Cloud Conference was a very worthwhile and well-organized event. From receiving actionable advice in order to accelerate cloud businesses, to uncovering new cloud solutions and revenue streams, we hope that our partners found it as valuable as we did. Hope to see you back next year.

Are you boosting your OS Security this Holiday Season?

The National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts holiday sales in November and December to increase by about 4 percent, with total projected sales of $616.9B. Online sales are expected to see up to 11 percent growth with sales projected to represent $105B. In addition, retailers are expected to hire between 725,000 and 800,000 seasonal workers.

That’s a lot of transactions, a lot of revenue and a lot of manpower. It’s also an opportune time for OS security breaches.

As we move through the 2014 holiday season, it’s crucial for organizations to understand the importance of implementing an OS security and compliance strategy. The most important components to address are privilege, auditing, password management and compliance. To break it down further, here are five basic principles to follow:
  1. Build: Build a foundation with Oracle Linux; install the minimum number of packages and lessen your company’s exposure to vulnerabilities;
  2. Control: Limit and control access to your system and data. Oracle partners work with a number of vendors who provide this feature, notably BeyondTrust and its PowerBroker product;
  3. Protect: Make certain that data is stored securely and password-protected; know how it’s transmitted, and who has access to it;
  4. Monitor: Guarantee continuous auditing to identify potential breaches;
  5. Maintain: Ensure that software updates are applied regularly, especially those that address vulnerabilities that can be exploited. With the Ksplice feature of Oracle Linux support, kernel updates can take place without shutting down the system, hence zero interruption to the online shopping experience.
The holidays are supposed to be a time for family, friends and cheer, not security breaches. Let Oracle help you keep it that way.

Be merry,
