Mix a Little Pleasure with Business at Oracle OpenWorld

A Guest Post By Dr. Patricia Dues, president of the OAUG

With such a jam-packed agenda full of quality sessions at Oracle OpenWorld, it’s hard to imagine having any down time to escape the confines of the convention center and the overload of information assailing your brain. But remember, you are in beautiful San Francisco, and it’s important to take a moment to rejuvenate. Here are three, quick time-outs to consider for Oracle OpenWorld this year.

Find a Spot at Yerba Buena Gardens. Recognized as one of the nation’s top 30 urban parks, Yerba Buena Gardens is known to be the cultural heart of San Francisco and is an inviting expanse of manicured lawns and shade against the intriguing area skyline. With its proximity to Moscone Center, Yuerba Buena Gardens is a perfect spot to enjoy your box lunch while taking in the OpenWorld entertainment, the people watching and a bit of fresh air.  If this area was not on your agenda during Oracle OpenWorld, it should be.

Shop at Westfield San Francisco Centre near Moscone. For all you shoppers out there, this 9-story mall will make your head spin. It features more than 170 shops, a multiplex, a dome-covered atrium and a great food court. It is not far from the convention center, so you can easily make the quick trip if you need to purchase more comfortable shoes or indulge yourself with a new designer outfit.

Take a look at our "by the numbers" progress in reaching our sustainability goals:

Waste Reduction:
  • 0.9 pounds of landfill per person per day, reduced 18% since 2009.
  • 2.56 pounds of waste per person per day, reduced 3% since 2009.
  • 233 hours of recycling education provided by 67 Green Angels to help event attendees properly sort waste.
  • 65% of waste diverted from landfill across all event venues in 2014.
  • 23 metric tons of landfill eliminated since 2012.
  • 126 metric tons of leftover event discards eliminated since 2012. That’s enough to fill 10 garbage trucks.

Carbon Offset
  • 5.24 pounds of carbon emissions per person per day, reduced 41% since 2011.

  • 5,234 gallon reduction in fuel use by shuttles since 2008.
  • 15% drop in generator fuel use since 2013.
