Welcome to my Oracle OpenWorld blog.

In the spirit of serving the Oracle OpenWorld community, I'll be blogging right here from now through showtime to bring you event updates, special announcements, registration and scheduling information, and other important news and opinions. I'll introduce guest bloggers from inside and outside Oracle, including some special surprises. And depending on your comments, I'll probably be discussing topics I haven't yet imagined.

My first topic of conversation, however, is you. In his award-winning book The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowieki notes the uncanny cleverness of groups. He makes an interesting observation about Who Wants to Be a Millionaire the television show that allows contestants to poll the audience or ask an expert for help to answer multiple-choice questions. The experts manage a respectable 65 percent accuracy rate, but the audience is even smarter, choosing the right answer 91 percent of the time.

So, what would happen if we captured the best of both worlds? What if we could tap the collective wisdom of a unique group that consisted entirely of experts? No need to guess'we'll find out this year at Oracle OpenWorld. And you're invited to participate. After all, when it comes to your job and your business, no one is more of an expert than you.

In fact, the individual expertise of Oracle's customers and partners, the staggering knowledge you and your peers own as a whole, and the importance of sharing this collective wisdom openly and efficiently were at the forefront of our minds as we planned this year's conference'and of course as we settled on a theme to describe it. The results: an interactive, customer-focused, completely socially networked event we're calling 'Your. Open. World.'

Let's break it down. We say it's 'Your' Oracle OpenWorld, because in the end it's really all about you. We want you to help select the session topics, so you learn what you want to learn about. We even want you to present your own session if you think you have something valuable to share. And we're going to provide numerous ways for you to provide input and feedback, before, during, and after the event.

The conference is 'Open' both in the way you can experience and mold it to meet your needs and expectations, and in the way you can participate and communicate throughout. We're adding community-building features and social networking capabilities from end-to-end, so you can find more and better ways to socialize, network, get and share information, and gain value.

And Oracle's premier event truly is a 'World' of its own. We'll fill all three Moscone Center buildings, the street in between, and various nearby hotels with keynotes, sessions, demos, exhibition halls, networking opportunities, and more. We'll provide today's world of business technology and its leaders all in one place. We'll connect everyone to keep things humming. And of course we've got top musical acts and legendary networking events to make sure we all have a world of fun.

Check back often for the latest news, hints, and more. I'm looking forward to seeing you online'and at Your. Open. World. Don't forget to register now to get the early bird rates.

What are the differences between Oracle OpenWorld 2007 and 2008 in terms of the Unconference and other "2.0" stuff?

Have you checked out the OpenWorld group on mix.oracle.com? This is the new Oracle OpenWorld social network for 2008. And, to answer your specific question, the unconference will have expanded hours and we have a lot of other cool ideas that are bubbling up for the conference that I'll blog about in the coming weeks. Check back here for updates.

Hello, I am hard pressed to find out how i can submit topics for OOW 2008. I posted some on MIX site. Is Mix the ONLY way to submit the sessions ? It was mentioned on the site that about 30 slot are given to Mix Presentations. What about the rest ? Are there any slots open for direct submissions like the previous years ? thanks in advance Sreekanth

Hi Sreekanth, Yes, at this time Mix is the only way. We have all of our content defined other than the customer selected sessions. Sorry! Thanks, Lisa
