Thomas Kurian/John Fowler Keynote: Transforming Business

By Diana Reichardt

In the Tuesday morning keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2013, Thomas Kurian, Oracle executive vice president of Product Development, provided a rundown on the company's latest product releases, including:

  • Oracle Database 12c
  • Oracle Fusion Middleware 12c
  • New package application suites
  • 10 new cloud service offerings, which expand Oracle’s comprehensive portfolio of application, social, platform, and infrastructure services and are available on a subscription basis

Kurian also introduced the Oracle Cloud Marketplace, a global marketplace where partners can publish applications and customers can browse through and discover new solutions to address their business needs.

“Our strategy is very simple: to offer a complete, open, integrated suite of software⎯database, middleware, and applications—and vertically integrate the pieces with our engineered systems and make every piece best of breed,” Kurian said.

John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems, talked about the evolution of hardware infrastructures and integrated systems. He said that Oracle engineered systems are open platforms that make customers’ applications run better.

In a detailed review of Oracle’s system announcements, Fowler highlighted three new engineered systems:

  • Oracle SuperCluster M6-32
  • Oracle Exalytics In-Memory Machine T5-8
  • Oracle Database Backup Logging Recovery Appliance

He also explained that the recently announced Oracle ZFS Storage ZS3-2 appliance delivers four times better price/performance for financial processing, database queries, and video streaming.

In closing, Fowler said that Oracle is continuing to invest in silicon leadership by doubling performance every two years—and that the SPARC M7/T7 is running in the lab now.
