Meeting Green, Part 2

Calculating the Environmental Impact of Oracle OpenWorld
Making sure that a conference is environmentally friendly has become an essential part of the planning process. The bigger the event, the bigger the potential impact—for better or worse. At Oracle, we fully recognize and embrace that challenge.
In Part 1 of this series, we introduced you to Meeting Strategies Worldwide, an award-winning environmental firm that evaluated the green practices of Oracle OpenWorld 2007. Meeting Strategies also provides organizations with expertise and resources to produce sustainable events, and its MeetGreen Calculator is a critical tool for determining whether the sustainability choices of a conference add up to green.
For each of the areas it evaluates, the MeetGreen Calculator compares specific event decisions with the greenest alternative practices. Did you contract with a caterer serving locally produced food rather than shipping in sushi from Japan? Add it to the ledger. Pick a pedestrian-friendly meeting site close to mass transit in lieu of shuttling VIPs in stretch limos? Put it on the books. Find ways to recycle and reuse conference materials instead of tossing it all in the landfill? Score it in the "plus" column. It all adds up to a more sustainable event.
