The Oracle Data Cloud hackathon: Creativity + data

At Oracle Data Cloud, we love to shake things up and think beyond the norm. And in August, our teams were able to do just that with our first ever Oracle Data Cloud Hackathon.

Hosted over two days (and overnight!) in Westminster, Colorado and with nearly 115 team members spanning 10 offices participating, the Hackathon was a unique opportunity for employees to re-imagine, re-invent and use their talents to create something entirely new that will be valuable to the organization as a whole.

“High-impact engineering such as our probabilistic data structures, a number of our AddThis publisher tools and efficient audience modeling were all created in Hackathons,” said Rich LaBarca, Senior Director, Oracle Data Cloud of a recent AddThis Hackathon in Virginia. “In fact, Hydra, a distributed data processing system, was created during an unsanctioned weekend AddThis Hackathon session by our former CTO.”

The Oracle Data Cloud Hackathon saw over 46 projects that ran the spectrum from highly technical (Abnormal Data Detection) to kitting out an old school Arcade Game with a whole new look, to improving internal day-to-day work processes. Data-driven engineers, marketers and more came together to brainstorm, then present, what they had dreamed up.

"As you start talking [with others], you realize that a lot of people have already solved the issues you’re facing – in a way, that’s better than what you could have thought of on your own,” said Shashank Rao, Senior Software Engineer, Oracle Data Cloud. “Basically, it gives you the chance to stand on the shoulders of giants."

But it wasn’t all work and no play for our teams. From Karaoke to a CrossFit session led by Oracle Data Cloud’s SVP (and certified CrossFit trainer), Eric Roza, participants were able to see why embracing company culture is such a big part of working for our organization.

"I couldn’t be happier with the results of our first Oracle Data Cloud Hackathon,” said Molly Boyer, Director of Internal Communications, Oracle Data Cloud. “Over the course of two days, we observed cross-team collaboration and relationship building. The success lies in seeing our teams getting to know each other and having fun!”

That sense of culture has also been embodied also by our famous TShirts – with slogans like, “Data is the New Bacon,” and “Show Me the Data!” the shirts are a creative and fun way to pay homage to our data roots. You may have seen our Data Boutique at the Oracle Data Cloud Summit this year, which was a huge hit with event attendees.

We can’t wait for the next Oracle Data Cloud Hackathon and seeing what our teams can create in the future.
