More than S’Mores: How we saved summer camp at Oracle Data Cloud
We’ve had to give up a lot of things in 2020: Restaurants. Childcare. Vacations. Hugs!
It has been a year of adaptation and compromise. But at Oracle Data Cloud, we believe in silver linings and making the best of things with the cards we’ve been dealt. In striving to maintain a positive and engaged workforce while our offices are closed, we’re focusing on innovation. How can we continue to bring exciting programs to our work family—and in the process, maybe make their upended lives a little easier?
So, with innovation and support in mind, we thought about the summer season and what parents and kids have had to forgo, which has been disappointing for all. This is when we came up with the idea to reimagine summer camp!
A virtual summer-camp experience
Much like our Bring Your Kids to Work Day, we pulled together a weeklong schedule of virtual events to entertain kids and hopefully free up some time for parents—so they can either work or relax! Here’s what was on the agenda:
Cooking class: Make ice cream in a bag!
Heat waves are happening all across our global regions, so we cooled down with a tutorial on how to make instant ice cream in a bag!
Arts & crafts: Repurpose those toilet-paper rolls
Stay-at-home orders have everyone using the “loo” more often. We got crafty and learned how to repurpose those empty toilet-paper rolls into art!
Magic class: Time to learn some tricks
For this session, we “picked up our wands” and learned some magic tricks.
Drawing class: Make our mascots
We picked up pen and paper to learn how to draw our camp mascots—Brody and Bubba the bears!
Plant life: Don’t trash those scraps
We learned how to use fruit-and-vegetable scraps and turn them into new plants!
Fun at any hour
We also came up with a few other activities that “campers” could complete on their own time. These included:

Recording their own renditions of our original camp song (to the tune of “On Top of Spaghetti!”)

A photo competition for the “Best at-Home Campsite”

Forging on and fostering fun
At Oracle Data Cloud, we feel that it’s so important to place extra emphasis on our culture programs as we continue to navigate a tricky time for all employees across our global workforce. Never has it been more crucial to provide support and find ways to engage, and brighten the days of our fellow teammates and their families.
