7 tips to start a career in digital marketing and advertising

Digital marketing is a rapidly growing field that offers many exciting opportunities for job seekers. These fast-paced environments can be challenging, but they can also be fun and rewarding. As a digital marketer, you’ll combine your creativity with a wealth of digitally generated metrics to build and drive digital marketing campaigns.

No marketing degree? No formal digital marketing work experience? No worries. There are lots of ways to get started in this exciting field. Here are seven tips for kick-starting your career in digital marketing and advertising:

1. Understand the data

Data analytics is at the heart of digital marketing. No matter how creative you are, as a digital marketer your creativity must be grounded in sound, data-based insights.

To succeed as a digital marketer, you must understand the value of data, know how to use it, and be able to demonstrate that to a potential employer. If you don’t already have that understanding, look for a course that will help you master data analytics.

2. Learn as much as you can about the field

What you lack in formal work experience can be compensated for by knowledge. At a minimum, you’ll need a good understanding of standard digital marketing terminology and how digital marketers use various tools and platforms to drive business results.

Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) is essential for digital marketing. You should also be well versed in demand-side platforms (DSPs) and supply-side platforms (SSPs)―the automated means through which ads are purchased and sold. Cost per impression (CPI) and click-through rate (CTR) are important metrics for evaluating ad expense and return on that expense in terms of eyes on a page.

You’ll show potential employers that you’re invested in a digital marketing career, which can give you a competitive edge over other job seekers. Plus, you’ll learn valuable information that can help you succeed in that new job when you get it.
