Ops Center and Oracle Solaris 11

There have been a few questions about Ops Center and S11 recently. People have been trying to discover and update S11 from Enterprise Controllers installed on S10 or Linux, and running into problems, and wondering what the solution is.

Well, the solution is that, if you want to be able to provision and update S11 OSes, and manage them using Agent Controllers, you need to install your Enterprise Controller and at least one Proxy Controller on S11 systems. The Oracle Solaris and Linux install guides both note this in the chapters that cover preparing your environment.

Technically, if you have an S11 Proxy Controller you can at least discover and monitor S11 systems. However, features like the automated installer and the image packaging system (for OS updates) can only be used through Ops Center if your Enterprise Controller is installed on S11 as well.

Comments:

Hello,

You said "if you want to be able to discover, monitor, and update S11 OSes, you need to install your Enterprise Controller and at least one Proxy Controller on S11 systems". I understand that S11 library can only be installed on an Oracle Solaris 11 system (so updates and provisioning need S11) but are you sure that we can not discover and monitor S11 systems if we install our EC and PC on a linux or Solaris 10 system?

Gokhan,

Parts of that section were incorrect; I've edited the post to clarify.

Discovering an asset also includes managing that asset - generally by installing an Agent on it. The installation of an Agent on S11 uses IPS, so it's only possible with an S11 EC and PC. However, you could discover and agentlessly manage an S11 system from a Linux or S10 EC and PC.

Monitoring an S11 system, though, does require at least an S11 Proxy Controller.

we have Opscenter installed on solaris11. Now we are looking for a proceedure for deploying CDOMS/LDOMS with solaris11.1. using Opscenter.

wanted to know is there a article explaining the above detailed scenario or is that possible in the firstplace?

Abhilash,

Yes, it's possible. The Oracle VM Server for SPARC chapter goes into more detail about it:
