Enterprise Controllers in Logical Domains

Guest Author

I saw a few questions about installing Enterprise Controllers in Logical Domains, and what's possible with that sort of deployment. Here are some answers:

"Is it supported to install the Enterprise Controller in a Logical Domain?"

Yep. The Certified Systems Matrix lists the supported OSes for EC installation, and Oracle VM Server for SPARC is supported (as are some Oracle Solaris Zones).

"Can you use Oracle Solaris Cluster to provide High Availability for an Enterprise Controller installed on a Logical Domain?"

Yes, this is possible. It deserves its own post, so I'll go into more detail on it soon, but yes, it works.

"If I have two Enterprise Controllers installed on Logical Domains, can I have EC 1 discover and manage the LDom for EC 2, and vice versa?"

No. The Agent Controllers installed on EC and PC systems are different from standard Agents, and if you install an Agent from one EC on another EC's system, it's going to get confused.

While true that one can run the EC in a OVM for SPARC guest VM, it is not currently supported (meaning, it will wreck your EC if you try to do it) to have the EC manage and monitor the control domain for the physical chassis where that VM runs. So, it is impossible to monitor the system which is one of the most important to the proper function of the EC.

If I have OVM Server for SPARC on 2x different clusters in 2x different data centers, what is the best way to manage the environment?

Could I take a least-used node in each cluster to place the OpsCenter, where that host can provide OpsCenter for each datacenter?

Should I make those instances of OpsCenter use 100% internal disks, so i have the least number of external dependencies, so these H/A nodes in each datacenter can properly care & feed for the other nodes, so if there is an external failure that OpsCenter will have an unhibited view of the world?
