SAS and Oracle - Partnering Innovation on Big Data and Cloud

Oracle was a Platinum sponsor of the 39th SAS Global Forum, which took place at the Gaylord Convention Center, Washington DC on March 23-26th with a record attendance of over 4,500 attendees. SAS Global Forum is the annual gathering of SAS professionals, and has been happening every year since 1976. Here is the Opening Keynote by CEO Jim Goodnight  —good overview in Dr. Goodnight’s 10-minute opening. The theme of this year's conference was celebrating the “potential of one, power of all” around the potential to turn a single data discovery into a better way of doing business.

Oracle’s Platinum sponsorship centered around the partnership with SAS to deliver the convergence of In-Memory and In-Database cloud platforms, for which Oracle’s Engineered Systems are providing unprecedented performance and scalability in SAS environments. Oracle had 2 main conference presentations, 2 SAS partner showcase opportunities and booth tech talks around this theme. David Lawler, Oracle SVP Product Management and Strategy, and Paul Kent, SAS VP Big Data, presented on SAS and Oracle: Big Data and Cloud – Partnering Innovation Targets the Third Platform. Paul and David shared their strategic insight into how SAS High-Performance Analytics solutions are tackling today’s big data challenges and requisite union to “data-optimized cloud platforms”.

The benefits of the collaborative effort between SAS and Oracle enable joint customers to realize tangible value by analyzing all their data, quickly, safely and with the necessary agility to reduce time to insight. As evidence of the SAS and Oracle partnership producing results for customers, a large banking institution in Latin America presented a solution of a global SAS deployment on Oracle SPARC M5 servers. This solution provided the bank impressive scalability for Analytics with 5,000 SAS users consolidating over 50 Oracle Databases onto the same system with a 70% reduction in processors and a 30% performance improvement.

Misys Kondor+ runs best on SPARC T5

Misys is a leading financial software vendor, providing the broadest portfolio of banking, treasury, trading and risk solutions available on the market. At ISV Engineering, we have a long-standing collaboration with the Kondor+ product line, that came from the Turaz acquisition (formerly part of Thomson Reuters) and now part of the Misys Treasury & Capital Markets (TCM) portfolio. Jean-Marc Jacquot, Senior Technical Consultant at Misys TCM, was recently interviewed by ITplace.TV (in French language) about a recent IT redesign of the Kondor+ installed base at a major French financial institution.

The customer was running various releases of Kondor+ over a wide range of SPARC machines, from Sun V240 to M4000. Morgan Stanley chooses Solaris 11 to run cloud file services

At the EAKC2012 Conference last week in Edinburg, Robert Milkowski, Unix engineer at Morgan Stanley, presented on deploying OpenAFS on Solaris 11. It makes a great proofpoint on how ZFS and DTrace gives a definite advantage to Solaris over Linux to run AFS distributed file system services, the "cloud file system" as Robert calls it in his blog. Robert used ZFS to achieve a 2-3x compression ratio on data and greatly lower the TCA and TCO of the storage subsystem, and DTrace to root-cause scalability bottlenecks and improve performance. As future ideas, Robert is looking at leveraging more Solaris features like Zones, ZFS Dedup, SSD for ZFS, etc.

ZFS secures your application

One of our ISV partner, a leading vendor in the financial services space, commonly recommends as deployment platform a commodity 2-socket Lintel server to minimize cost, but equipped with an internal RAID storage controller to increase the application uptime on such entry-level servers by mirroring the root disk. We recently worked with its professional services team to explore if we could improve on the solution, i.e. continuing to bring the cost down while increasing uptime.

The proposed solution was to use the Oracle Solaris 10 operating system and its ZFS file system in lieu of the hardware RAID to mirror the root hard drive. ZFS is a new kind of filesystem that provides simple administration, transactional semantics and immense scalability. ZFS natively supports all common RAID functionalities and also embeds advanced fonctionnalities in compression, encryption and snapshot, typically expected from proprietary high-end storage systems.

Latency Matters

A lot of interest in low latencies has been expressed within the financial services segment, most especially in the stock trading applications where every millisecond directly influences the profitability of the trader. These days, much of the trading is executed by software applications which are trained to respond to each other almost instantaneously. In fact, you could say that we are in an arms race where traders are using any and all options to cut down on the delay in executing transactions, even by moving physically closer to the trading venue.

The Solaris OS network stack has traditionally been engineered for high throughput, at the expense of higher latencies. Knowledge of tuning parameters to redress the imbalance is critical for applications that are latency sensitive. We are presenting in this blog how to configure further a default Oracle Solaris 10 installation to reduce network latency.
