Back from a sunny 4-day week-end, I am reading a digest of recent Sun-related news and blogs. One article is catching my attention… Shanti's blog on memcached performance on OpenSolaris vs Linux. She has benchmarked memcached 1.3.2 using parts of the Apache Olio web 2.0 workload on OpenSolaris and Red Hat EL 5 --both operating systems properly tuned-- and her big news is that OpenSolaris outperforms Linux by 25% ! But that's not what caught my attention. It was that...

Civilization® is one of these mythical and addictive strategy video games that many of us in IT have played, well into the night. The original Sid Meier's Civilization game, now in it fourth version, runs on Windows only. If you are running any flavor of Unix --Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris-- instead, you have the alternative of playing Freeciv, an open-source strategy game based on the gameplay of Civilization II. Since Solaris 10, which comes blunded with the GNU developer stack...

Hamburg-based Portrix is providing and hosting the telephony software SmartDialer for a large German call center. SmartDialer is based on a Solaris port of the open-source Asterisk package. The application performs very well on the Sun Fire T2000 chosen for deployment --Solaris outperforms Linux at running Asterisk and Sparc CMT processors are ideally suited for highly multithreaded applications like Asterisk. In production however, SmartDialer experienced some stability...

In 2001, our ISV Engineering group at Sun --f.k.a. Market Development Engineering-- released the first version of the Hardware Activity Reporter (HAR) tool for Solaris 8 and up. Starting with Solaris 8, Sun had begun to deliver public interfaces for the SPARC and x86 hardware performance counters --libcpc, to access CPU counters and libpctx, to track a process--, leading to a new generation of performance monitoring tools: the Solaris cpustat and cputrack commands,...

Thanks to the user community, which reported issues on my original blog release of icalds, I am able to release today icalds 2.1 which includes one minor fix --icalds now strips out the MEMBER params when subscribing to a Sun Calendar server-- and a first validation of the Publish use case --you maintain your calendar in iCal and publish it out to a Sun Calendar server through icalds.
