With the huge Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco only a week away, it has been go-go-go here inside Oracle. My inbox is being "aggressively filtered" a.k.a back-logged as I help prepare presentations, hands-on-labs and exhibition hall demos for PHP and Ruby on Rails sessions. Teams from Oracle development and research centers around the world that contribute to open source development have been integral in creating some great content for OOW.But this week I'll be...

I'm sitting in the first talk at the Zend Conference and listening to Terry Chay's talk about Art in Software Architecture. He's speaking about the connection pooling solution that Tagged.com use with their Oracle DB infrastructure.I can tell he skipped the morning keynote to polish his talk because he spoke only about current issues with huge websites (tens of millions of registered users) and connection management.Well, those issues are in the past, and if Terry hadn't...

Yuli Vasiliev has put a lot of real-world PHP and Oracle experience into his book PHP Oracle Web Development. The book's reviewer, Arup Nanda, was, amongst other things, Oracle's DBA of the Year in 2003. The result is an excellent book that joins the PHP and Oracle worlds together.Disclaimer: I work for Oracle, and I also co-wrote a free introductory Oracle PHP book, Underground PHP and Oracle Manual. My book had its inception when no Oracle PHP books were available. It...

Continuing my posting flood this week (relax, only two more posts to come after this one): Antony Dovgal took a snapshot of the OCI8 extension that shipped with PHP 5.2.4 and bundled it up standalone in PECL as OCI8 1.2.4. Windows binaries are here. The highlights: a fix to statement caching, some LOB fixes, some error handling fixes, and some meta data fixes. Check the changelog to see if any of the changes will enhance your PHP experience.

After PHP 5.2.4 shipped and a new release cycle began, I merged a couple of enhancements to PDO_OCI attribute handling. Specifically I added $dbh->getAttribute() support for ATTR_SERVER_VERSION, ATTR_SERVER_INFO, ATTR_CLIENT_VERSION and. ATTR_AUTOCOMMIT. At the moment these are only available in the PHP snapshots on http://snaps.php.net/. Let me know if there are any issues so they can be resolved before the next PHP release.I wrote some notes on the existing and newly...
