Get Rich Quick

It's entirely fitting that Rich Green, Sun's top Software executive, chose to start his own Sun blog on this particular day. In his first days back at Sun last May, he and Jonathan Schwartz announced that Sun would release Java as open source. Now, barely six months later, open source code for Java SE and Java ME went live this morning on java.net. And even though we've been talking about this for months, you still can't escape the fact that this is a huge milestone in technology--when you consider how many people touch Java in one form or another every day (most researchers estimate the Internet population at close to 1 billion people) and how many devices (roughly 4 billion) depend on Java to run. The fact that Sun is kicking Java innovation up a notch is, well, huge.

I hope you'll keep going back to Rich's blog. He's super smart and a genuinely nice guy with a keen sense of humor--which I hope will make more of an appearance in his future blogs. Like many smart people, Rich thinks in metaphors, so one of the funniest parts of my job is listening to him weave together allusions to gym teachers, clean jerseys, pulling a Ghandi, flying the plane and osmotic pressure. And, even funnier, it all makes sense. Knowing Rich, after a blog or two, he'll relax and let the colorfulisms fly. Stay tuned.
