Latest developments for ODF 1.2 and Patrick Durusau

ODF
Noted XML standards expert Patrick Durusau will edit the 1.2 release of the ISO/IEC Open Document Format (ODF), currently being developed in the OASIS standards body. Durusau will be repeating the role he played as editor of ODF 1.0, which was unanimously approved as an International Standard in May 2006. He is also the chair of the Metadata subcommittee in OASIS.

Durusau's contract, sponsored by Sun Microsystems, allows him to continue a role he had during the development of ODF v 1.0 and 1.1 in OASIS, and in the submission of 1.0 to the ISO/IEC fast track process. Both the OASIS and ISO organizations have clear and well developed policies for participation which ensure all interests have input to the specification.

Carl Cargill, Sun's Director of Corporate Standards states, "Patrick has earned the respect of the document standards community for his expertise in editing ODF 1.0 and his fairness in conducting a difficult but thorough US national-body review of DIS 29500 (an alternative document standard). Sun's contribution ensures his continued availability as editor of ODF as that International Standard is updated and maintained by a diverse community of individuals, corporations, and governments."

Durusau said, "I am happy to be able to continue working on ODF, both as the technical editor for the next revision of the specification, but especially in the area of ODF support for metadata."

This revision of the standard retains full backward compatibility with v 1.0 and addresses several enhancements and new features, including formulas. The accessibility improvements in ODF v 1.1, an interim OASIS Standard, will be included in ODF 1.2 submitted to the ISO/IEC approval process, giving ODF one of the richest sets of accessibility features available in any document format.

The enthusiastic reception of ODF as the ISO/IEC standard for XML-based office document formats has been a watershed event for the ITC industry. Customers around the world have seized on the open standard for its stability and the robust ecosystem of suppliers enabled by its vendor-neutral architecture.
