Sun Continues to Dominate UNIX Storage Market with 15 Consecutive Quarters of Growth
Sun Storage continues upon its strategy for growth: IDC released its quarterly Disk Storage tracking numbers this week for Q2CY07 and Sun showed growth in a number of key areas:
- UNIX Revenue: Sun retained the #1 ranking for the 15th consecutive quarter with 30,747 units shipped and share of 32.7%, up from 28,198 and share of 32.4%, in the previous quarter;
- The ST6000 product family, specifically the ST6540 and ST6140, helped Sun achieve more than 35% midrange revenue growth and helped Sun gain market share for revenue and units shipped. This result was the highest growth rate among the major vendors in this category.
- Sun moved up into the top 5 in revenue for Total Disk Storage (All Operating Systems);
- Revenue attributed to the storage portion of Sun Fire X4500, or Thumper, also boosted Sun's revenue and units shipped in the midrange: Sun continued its strong pattern of growth with this storage capacity workhorse. Sun shipped a phenomenal 7.5 petabytes in the quarter on the Thumper platform, which happens to be running at an impressive $100 million revenue run rate per quarter since launch.
"Sun's growth in the storage market for the quarter - including an impressive 35% increase in the midrange - can be attributed to our unique strategy of offering an end-to-end storage portfolio that takes advantage of the benefits of the open source operating system -- Solaris," said Nigel Dessau, senior vice-president, marketing and business operations. "Today numbers support our strategy for growth with unique Sun-only products like the Sun StorageTek 6000 series family and the Sun Fire x4500 Thumper systems fast catching on with customers."
