Belly Up to the Bar w/ a Smart Card
By michelleparkinson on Jul 11, 2007
Last weekend before dinner at Gator's Neo-Soul Cafe (they've got killer wild rice boudin cakes and fried chicken) we stopped in for a drink at 750ml in San Mateo. Part retail wine store, part wine bar, 750ml (sister to Vino Venue in SF) uses the Enomatic wine dispensing machine. I'd seen something about the machine before -- it's an Italian system that holds 10-15 bottles and dispenses 1 oz. servings for a set price. Kind of takes the fun out of getting a generous pour from a bartender, but you can see the business benefits for tracking popular wines, inventory, etc.
But look at the access card -- I'd never seen a Java-based smart card completely in the wild. If you've been to JavaOne or our Forum conference, your badge was a Java-based smart card, but as a completely consumer application? Where's our branding? Heck, where's 750ml's branding?
