Gartner and IDC Show Sun Gaining Server Market Share

In case you missed it, during Sun's last quarterly earnings report revenue for the company's "core" business (think servers, storage, software before the StorageTek and SeeBeyond acquisitions) was up 12%.  Growth, as Jonathan likes to remind us, is a beautiful thing!

That growth was reflected in yesterday's worldwide quarterly server reports from both IDC and Gartner.  Sun is gaining market share.  Checkout the release we issued based on the Garnter report:  Sun Release

ANALYST FIRM SHOWS SUN GAINING MARKETSHARE IN WORLDWIDE SERVER According to Gartner, Sun re-captured the top spot in UNIX server revenue.  And Sun was the only top-five server vendor to have positive growth both year-to-year and quarter-to-quarter.  Steve Josselyn, research director, Enterprise Server research at IDC, does a good job of capturing Sun's performance:

"Sun's server revenue growth and market share gains are an indication that the company's most recent product strategies are beginning to resonate with customers.  While the majority of Sun's server revenue is driven by traditional UltraSPARC IV and UltraSPARC IV+ systems, the introduction of the Niagara-based chip multithreaded machines and Opteron-based x-64 Galaxy products have begun to generate significant customer interest."
