OpenSolaris enthusiast, blogger talks about 2009.06 release

Reviews Interactive recently spoke with OpenSolaris enthusiast and influential blogger Octave Orgeron about the new OpenSolaris 2009.06 release. Octave is a Systems Architect with more than a decade of professional experience in designing, deploying and supporting Solaris solutions for the enterprise. He has been involved with OpenSolaris since the beginning and actively contributes to the OpenSolaris Logical Domains (LDoms) community through blog posts, articles and support.

Octave discussed the new features in OpenSolaris 2009.06 stating “I've found that the desktop integration and increasing amounts of IPS packages to be very helpful and productive for me.” Octave also said that Crossbow and Xen have been “of great interest to me” on the virtualization front. However, he claimed the biggest enhancement personally was the SPARC support because of the work and testing he does on the SPARC platform.

OpenSolaris Set To Rock CommunityOne Conference - June 1

The OpenSolaris team is getting ready for the 2009 CommunityOne conference, June 1-3, 2009, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and planning a whole series of sessions, events and activities. You can see the full listing here.

Some highlights include:

General session keynotes - On June 1 at 9am pacific, John Fowler, executive vice president of Systems, and Dave Douglas, senior vice president of Cloud Computing and Chief Sustainability Officer of Sun will open the 2009 CommunityOne conference.

OpenSolaris Technical and Deep Dive Sessions - OpenSolaris content will be featured as part of the general Operating Systems/Platform track. There will also be two OpenSolaris software specific tracks, one for developers and one for system administrators. On Tuesday, June 2, developers and systems administrators can also participate in OpenSolaris deep-dive sessions.

For those who can not attend CommunityOne in person, the opening general session keynotes and the OpenSolaris technical sessions will also be available online.

OpenSolaris Install Lounge - Located in Booth #322 on the Pavilion floor, the Install Lounge will consist of three areas: an OpenSolaris Install Fest area, RockBand 2 area and the “Apps of Steel” showcase area, which will highlight the winners of the Apps of Steel Challenge. Toshiba will also be participating in the OpenSolaris Install Lounge to showcase the Toshiba Tecra M10 and Portégé R600 laptops that come with OpenSolaris software pre-installed.

OpenSolaris and Sun Cloud Party - The evening of June 1is also the OpenSolaris and Sun Cloud party, from 7-9 p.m. at the Moscone Center in Hall A.

New Solaris Advancements for Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series

In conjunction with the Intel announcement today, Sun is announcing details on Solaris and OpenSolaris enhancements for the new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

Sun and Intel have been working for over two years to ensure Solaris is optimized to work with the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

According to Jim McHugh, Sun VP of Datacenter Software marketing, Sun's Solaris OS is uniquely positioned as the best operating system to leverage the features of the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series and this combination of technologies allows customers to take advantage of scalability, performance, power efficiency and reliability found in no other x86 platform combination.

Sherry Moore offers a developer/system administrator's perspective over on her blog and Scott Davenport talks here about the Fault Management Architecture (FMA) in OpenSolaris, which has been extended to utilize status information from the Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

Sun Studio Express 3/09, the official build used for the Sun Studio 12 Update 1 Early Access Program, is now available on Solaris, OpenSolaris and the latest Linux distributions (RHEL/SuSE/Ubuntu/CentOS), feature highlights since the Sun Studio 12 release include:
