Sun's Santa Clara Datacenter Wins Eco Award!

The Uptime Institute recognized Sun with a Green Enterprise IT Award for the our work on our energy-sipping Santa Clara datacenter, as outlined in the whitepaper - "Aligning Business Organizations: Sun's approach for building energy-efficient datacenters."

Dean Nelson, Sun senior director of global lab and datacenter design services, accepted the award
tonight and provided an overview of Sun's eco responsibility efforts to Ken Brill, Executive Director of the Uptime Institute, in a podcast you can find here.

The official award name is a bit of a tongue-twister - Best-in-Class Implementation Winner for the 2008 Uptime Institute Green Enterprise IT Awards in the category of Energy Efficient IT Hardware Deployment. Click here for full details on the awards.

One of FORTUNE's World's Most Admired!

Two weeks ago FORTUNE's listing of America's Most Admired companies list was published, and today it published its World's Most Admired companies list.

And Sun is on that list!  As with the America's list, Sun's scores improved in every category. Our ranking within the Computers category jumped from #8 to #6 this year and the company’s overall score improved .47 of a point.

Looking at the improvement over two years is equally impressive, including a seven place rise in Innovation, a six position jump in Financial Soundness and Long-term investment and a five position jump in our rank among computer companies, people management and global competitiveness.

Kim Jones Honored as Finalist for Technology Innovator of the Year by Stevie Awards for Women in Business

Kim Jones, vice president of Global Education, Government and Health Sciences, Sun Microsystems, was named as finalist in the 3rd Annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business, honoring women executives and the companies they run worldwide. Jones was selected for her leadership of a diverse organization committed to creating technological innovations that improve the quality of government, education and healthcare on a global level.

Among her many accomplishments, Jones has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of technology in education by co-founding Curriki(www.curriki.org) formerly known as the Global Education and Learning Community(GELC), which is an innovative non-profit community for developing open source curricula for educators of all types. Jones also played a key role in securing a $400 million contract to supply computer workstations for the Enciclomedia project launched by the Mexican Ministry of Education. Jones' team was also instrumental in the Iraqi Virtual Science Library (IVSL) project that leverages the Internet to rebuild the civil infrastructure of Iraq. Under her leadership, a key deal was brokered with the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development for the National Education Information System (NEIS) project, established by South Korea's Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development. She also was a key player in Sun’s work with the Italian Ministry of Education University and Research (MIUR), in collaboration with the Java Italian Association (JIA), who have an agreement to extend the knowledge of Java technology within Italian schools by providing online access to Java training courses for students and IT teachers.

Sun Ray Wins CES Award for Eco-Design

Great news! Sun’s Sun Ray 270 Virtual Display Client system won the CES Innovations Design and Engineering Award
for design excellence in the Eco-Design category. The awards were judged by a pre-eminent panel of independent
industrial designers, engineers and members of the trade press. This set of established and prestigious awards is
sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, the producer of the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
which is the world's largest consumer technology tradeshow. The contest is endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society
of America.

The Sun Ray 270 delivers secure, interoperable desktop computing without the maintenance, upgrading, and operational
costs of desktop computers. It is eco-friendly, compact and offers VESA mounting. This is a great endorsement for
Sun's thin-client innovation.
