Sun's Prolific Patenters

In the last eight weeks, more than 14 patents have been issued to Sun Laboratories researchers.  Some of these are first-time recepients of patents, others have several under their belts.  Here are some highlights:

  • Method and apparatus  for using memory compression to enhance error correction, Gregory M. Wright; Mario I. Wolczko
  • Selecting  basis functions to form a regression model for cache performance, Ilya Gluhovsky;  David Vengerov; John R. Busch    
  • Transparent switch using optical and electrical  proximity communication, John E. Cunningham; Ashok V. Krishnamoorthy; Ronald Ho; Robert J. Drost
  • Floating point divider with embedded  status information, Guy L. Steele, Jr.  
  • Blinded encryption and decryption, Radia J. Perlman

Mind your P's.. People, Products, Patents, Profitability. If you don't have Profitability in Sum Micro. soon, the other P's will not matter!

People have been saying for years that SUN is too small of a company to support the R&D as well as the Chip development that is conducted.

SUN's products are highest performance per watt, highest performance per dollar, or highest performance period - depending on the computing category.

SUN runs nearly every significant operating system on the market, both open source and proprietary.

People must decide that they want to pay for SUN's products... Profitability is only a matter of time with decades of continuous innovation - even if profitability is cyclical.
