New World-Record Results on Sun Fire and Sun Ultra Systems Powered by Highest-Performing AMD Opteron Processors

Sun has just set a few world records on systems powered by the highest-performing AMD Opteron Model 2222 and 8222 SE x86 dual-core server processors, which AMD announced last month. Here are some highlights:

1) Sun Fire X4100 M2 server undercuts competition with price/performance World Record on 300 GB TPC-H benchmark

Leading the way with the first and only non-clustered single rack-unit (RU) configuration, the Sun Fire X4100 M2 server, powered by two AMD Opteron Model 2222SE processors and using the SybaseIQ database manager, achieved the record setting price/performance of US$5.89/QphH@300GB on TPC-H benchmark at 300GB scale factor. Notably, this result is 2.6 times less expensive than the rival IBM System x3650 server's price/performance of US$15.40/QphH@300GB (10165 QphH@300GB, available 10/6/06).

2) Sun Fire X4200 M2 server gets double the performance and stunning price/performance on 100GB TPC-H benchmark

The Sun Fire X4200 M2 server, outfitted with two dual-core AMD Opteron Model 2222SE processors running at 3GHz, more than doubles the TPC-H performance of 4132QphH@100GB (US$4.61/QphH@100GB, available 06/23/06) posted by the Sun Fire X4100 server. The Sun Fire X4200 M2 server produced the result of 8587QphH@100GB, utilizing SybaseIQ database manager and used RAID-protected database storage to emulate real-world enterprise datacenter requirements.

3) Sun Ultra 40 M2 Workstation attains best 4-core x86 integer throughput score on SPEC CPU2006 benchmark, and proves itself as the world's most extreme CAD/CAM graphics workstation (link coming soon!)

The Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstation, equipped with two Dual-Core AMD Opteron model 2222SE processors, assumes the lead on industry-recognized SPECint_rate2006 benchmark by utilizing the most advanced features of freely available Sun Studio 12 software that consists of performance tools, NetBeans software-based Integrated Development Environment (IDE) as well as C, C++, and Fortran compilers.

Combining the best available graphics technology with the industry-leading processor architecture, the Sun Ultra 40 M2 workstation, equipped with two AMD Opteron Model 2222SE processors running at 3GHz, also achieved record-setting SPECapc Unigraphics NX 3 overall composite score of 9.61.
