Creating and sharing FC LUNs from an Oracle ZFS 7120 Storage Appliance

While working on a larger project in which we will be using Ops Center to create a resilient OVM for Sparc environment, we borrowed a ZFS 7120 Storage appliance. The 7120 will be used to distribute FC LUNs to boot our Control Domain (CDOM). As we’ve never had the opportunity to play with a 7120 before, we needed to some quick learning and thought it would be a good idea to share with you.

Please note: we are not Storage experts, there may be an easier way to create and share FC LUNs – as mentioned this is just one component of a larger Project. Hopefully you may find some of the information useful.

So our aim:

  • Create FC LUN’s on the 7120 and share them.
  • Make the LUN visible to our host – we’ll be using a factory reset Sparc T5-2 Server

In a later blog we will show you how to discover the ZFS appliance with Ops Center so we can create a dynamic storage library.

Creating and Sharing LUNs

The first step was to figure out which WWN (World Wide Number) and ports are used for the FC. This is done by logging into the 7120 via a web –browser i.e. https://<7120-hostname>:215. Don’t forget to add the port number!

Then click on Configure -> SAN -> Fiber Channel Port.

Next to the Port that you are interested in (Port 2 in our case) click the i and another screen will pop up.

From the pop-up the WWN of the host can be identified.

We now need to see if the FC port is connected to the T5-2 host which in our case is running solaris 11. To check if the ports can be seen from the host, we used the following:

This shows us that the FC Port on the 7120 can be seen by our host. So all is good…so far!

So now we need to create and presents some LUN’s to the T5-2 from the 7120. To do this first we need to create a “Target group” to define the ports and protocols that will be inherited by the LUN and presented to the T5-2.

This is done from Configure -> SAN -> Fibre Channel Port, click the drop down as show in the image and change from Initiator to Target. This will require a reboot of the 7120 – you’ll be prompted by a pop-up.

Now we need to add the Fibre Channel Ports to the Fibre Channel Target Groups. This is done by placing the mouse in the Fibre Channel Ports box and a Move icon (move icon) will appear, drag this to the left.

Once the Ports are under the Target Groups, you can rename the group by clicking on the pen symbol (shown below), or leave them in the default group. We created two groups, one name Ops-Center-Primary (for the CDOM) and the other Ops-Center-Secondary (for the alternative Domain).

Next we can create some LUNs.

The first LUN we created will be used for installing the OS on the CDOM. We created a 20Gb LUN and named it Primary-LUN. The other LUN we created was for the Alternate domain called Secondary-LUN – we’re very imaginative with our naming!

We did this by going to: Shares -> SHARES and clicking the plus iconicon next to LUNs.

From the “Create LUN” pop-up, we entered the Name and required size. Then clicked Apply
