Solaris 11 Express is Here!

After a long, drawn out wait, the latest release of the OpenSolaris distribution, now called Solaris 11 Express, is finally here!

In the 17 months since the last official release of OpenSolaris a lot of new goodies have been added. Some of my favorites:

  • ZFS Deduplication
  • ZFS Encryption
  • Boomer audio subsystem
  • Interactive Text Installer
  • Solaris 10 Zones

For all the details on the new features see the article What's New in Oracle Solaris 11 Express 2010.11.

Upgrade Note

The Release Notes do include instructions on how to upgrade to Solaris 11 Express from OpenSolaris. If you're still running OpenSolaris 2009.06 (build 111b), you'll first need to update to the never released (until now) 2010.05 (build 134). If you're already on a development build of OpenSolaris, you should be good to go. I also recommend using the command line when running image-update. I've had mixed results when trying to use to the Image Update GUI.

Comments:

The /release repo has in fact been updated, but just the packaging bits required to get you through changing your default publisher to pkg.oracle.com.

IIRC to upgrade an osol release and you need first to upgrade to the latest osol release then change the default repository to pkg.oracle.com and update again. See the release notes for details.

Uhmm.. who cares??

Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me!

Long live Illumos, OpenIndiana, Schillix, Belenix, etc.

Interesting .... Ken says "who cares?" yet he seems to care enough to post a lame comment. %-)

Personally I have been anxious to install and start using this release. Thus far I very pleased with the upgrade experience and what I am seeing in this new release.

Keep up the great work.

Oracle disabled repositories for Opensolaris 134b and Solaris11 express.
So you can NOT update to Solaris11express/S11 anymore, prom previous installations.
Ergo, you can not buy Oracle Solaris support if upgrading from previous RELEASES.

On plus side, there are Illumos-made Openindiana and Nexenta and Joyent distributions that are supported and compatible on ZFS level with ZfsOnLinux and FreeBSD ZFS implementations.
On Minus side, Oracle Solaris "provides" proprietary lock-in to unlucky potential customers with Solaris CD/DVD in hand.
Better install Openindiana and forget usage restrictions that oracle tries to impose on unexpected new business users.
