OpenSolaris 2008.05 includes the Java Runtime Environment, but not the full Java Development Kit (JDK). It is easy enough to install it, however, from the opensolaris.org repository. The key is to use the correct search term.
Start the Package Manager by choosing System > Administration > Package Manager. If you enter "java" into the search field, this is what you will see (click for full size):
If you scroll through the list, you will not see an entry for the JDK. If, however, you search for "jdk" you will see an entry for the SUNWj6dev package (click for full size):
The SUNWj6dev package contains JDK 6. As of the date this blog entry was written, the version of SUNWj6dev in the opensolaris.org repository contains JDK 6 update 4 - hopefully it will be refreshed soon with the latest JDK 6 update.
