OpenSolaris 2008.11 Training in Brno
By Roman Strobl on Mar 03, 2009
Me, Martin Man and Lubos Kocman (all three CZOSUG leaders) organized a full day training at Faculty of Informatics Masaryk university, Brno. Sun is partnering this university and we cooperate a lot around OpenSolaris. I've been to the university about 6 times so far. The most recent training was focused on 2008.11 and it was also an install fest. Here are the slides from the event:
Martin took a picture with his phone at the training:
As you could see, the small room was pretty much packed and so we were pretty happy about the interest in OpenSolaris.
Here are some additional observations from the training:
\* Only 1 of the attendees had previous OpenSolaris experience. Most of the attendees were Linux users + few BSD users. So it was a nearly perfect audience for us (big potential for converts :).
\* There was a lot of questions about ZFS - this was probably the #1 topic of interest for attendees. We ran a ZFS hands on lab, which was a good learning experience for the attendees.
\* The install fest went quite well, although OpenSolaris wouldn't install on 2 old laptops at all, so we advised them to use VirtualBox.
\* We had RedHat and IBM employees at the training. It's nice to see Sun's competition is interested, too :)
\* We had a great "case study" type of presenation from Petr Adamek (from a Czech software company) who deployed OpenSolaris on 3 machines including a desktop machine, laptop and server and had was pretty excited about it. This was a really nice presentation because someone outside of Sun said he really likes OpenSolaris and also he confirmed the reasons for using OpenSolaris we mentioned earlier.
\* The concept of a full-day training with a hands on experience seems to be very popular (we did this in Prague in December) so we plan to use the same format in other cities in Czech republic - and potentially also outside of Czech republic.
