Don't Blame the Printer
By Brian Leonard on Jan 27, 2010
Folks often wonder if the printer they have (or are planning to buy) will work with OpenSolaris. The good news is that BigAdmin maintains an HCL for printers known to work with OpenSolaris. The bad news, however, is that there's only 53 printers in the list (and most of those appear to be laser printers).
So, if you have a printer that works with OpenSolaris, please take the time to allow your fellow community members to know about it. Here's how...
Submitting Your Printer
Follow this link to submit hardware to the OpenSolaris HCL.
For Submission Type Category, select "Component". There isn't a certification test suite for printers, so leave the default setting as "No".
For the Component Information page, enter the required information marked with an asterisk. Although not marked, Technology Type is also required. Use the General Notes field to provide any additional hoops you had to jump through in order to get the printer to work.
Finally, you'll need to provide the output from prtconf -pv. Save it to a file as follows:
prtconf -pv > prtconf.txt
and upload the file when asked:
And the BigAdmin team will take it from there. Let's see how many printers we can get listed for OpenSolaris. I'd like to see over 1000.
