Big day for OpenSolaris community

It's a great day for OpenSolaris community - the pending and contrib repos are available and it's now pretty easy to contribute packages into a central repository with low barrier to entry. It was possible to contribute before by creating your IPS repository but a central community repo was something that was really missing because it was hard for people to find all the different useful repos. The contribution process is described on this page. I am expecting that the community will create many useful packages and make OpenSolaris stronger. Let the fun begin!

Comments:

indeed a big day. looking forward for things to come there. :)

Oh I hope someone creates a package for Inkscape. I've had the hardest time trying to compile this app for OpenSolaris.

How do I install a package from the contrib repos?

I hope, that inkscape will be available for opensolaris! I'll wait for it!

Inkscape isn't that big a deal; if you use gcc + recent Gtk+ as a base you should be done in a day or so. I did a port to Studio 12 a while back which required rebuilding the entire C++ stack in GNOME as well as fixing all the gcc-isms there and in Inkscape .. this got me to the point that the whole thing would compile, and then crash on some bizzarre behind-your-back manipulation of a const list of const references -- funkiness in any case. Suffice to say I never released that port, although the patches are in the JDS team's hands.

Wayne, to install a package from the contrib repo, you first need to add its URL to OpenSolaris:

pfexec pkg set-authority -O http://pkg.opensolaris.org/contrib contrib

You can then install packages just like any other.

Hope that helps,
Brian
