Create deeper insights with new features in OCI Operations Insights

OCI Operations Insights (OPSI), introduced last year as part of the Oracle Cloud Observability and Management platform, helps gain deeper insights into the infrastructure and database resources, performs data-driven capacity planning and performance management, and enables improvements to applications throughput.

We continue to enhance OPSI on a periodic basis and in the last couple of months we have rolled out quite a few exciting new capabilities. This blog summarizes the key new capabilities in OCI Operations Insights.

OPSI Database Capacity Planning over-allocation insights 

The ability to correlate the database resource allocation with the physical resources available on the underlying infrastructure is a critical part of capacity planning. OPSI can assist in over- and under-allocation evaluations. OPSI's Database Capacity Planning now displays the underlying host capacity in addition to the database allocation. For example, as seen below, a shaded region on the Trend & Forecast chart for Database CPU indicates when a server has been over-allocated (the number of CPUs allocated to the database instances exceeds what is available on the host).

Data Object Explorer dashboard integration enhances overall experience

OPSI's Data Object Explorer just became a lot more powerful!  Content can now be saved for later use, visualized, and used in dashboards, enhancing the overall experience with our dashboards. Queries that have been created in the Data Object Explorers (SQL Explorer and Exadata Explorer) can now be saved for viewing at a later point in time, shared among colleagues, and also placed directly onto a dashboard alongside other "widgets." Additionally, line chart, bar chart, area chart, and pie chart visualizations are now available.

Enhanced integration with Database Management for on-premises and cloud

The integration with other services in general allows for extended capabilities of the DBMS service while carrying the context for additional analysis. OCI Database Management Service provides database monitoring and administration capabilities for on-premises and cloud databases. The OPSI integration with this service, allows you to transition from short-term views of your data to long-term, historic data that allows further trend analysis. Users of the Database Management service can now conveniently drill into Operations Insights from within the managed database details page. Drill-downs into Oracle SQL Warehouse and Capacity Planning are available. If the current database is not yet enabled for Operations Insights, users will be guided through the enablement process.

Exadata Explorer new metrics available provide for deeper analysis

Last year in November we announced the new Exadata Insights that provided a holistic view of all Exadata systems across your enterprise and helped optimize capacity planning.  The Exadata Explorer now allows for even deeper analysis with new metrics available.  New data objects exposing aggregated Exadata Cell Disk metrics (hourly and daily) are available within the Exadata Explorer. Access to the data objects is available via the Exadata Explorer menu option (select Exadata Insights and then Exadata Explorer) or via the Dashboards menu (Dashboards and then Data Object Explorer). Select Exadata Cell Disk Daily/Hourly from the Data Object drop-down menu. Additional data object enhancements will continue in the future.

Support Smart Chat rollout with Operations Insights

Operations Insights now supports the Support Chat, built on the Oracle Digital Assistant platform.  The AI-driven interfaces (known as chatbots) help users find useful content by using natural language conversations.  This content is curated and should direct users to the most relevant resources, eliminating other time-consuming searches.  Access the Support Chat by selecting the Chat with us option from the OCI Help Menu. Alternatively, this option can be accessed via the OCI console Support Life Raft widget.

New OCI cloud regions availability around the world

A region is a localized geographic area with one or more data centers located within a region. OCI has multiple cloud regions around the world to provide local access to cloud resources.  The various OCI services are made available in various regions on a continuous basis.  Operations Insights is now available in a new region, Querétaro (mx-queretaro-1).  To explore all available OCI data regions see, OCI Data Regions.
