Monitor Your Oracle PeopleSoft Application and its stack using Stack Monitoring

Last April, we released Stack Monitoring, a cloud-based solution under Oracle Observability and Management that discovers and monitors applications such as E-Business Suite and its application tech stack components such as WebLogic Server, Oracle Database and hosts in a single view. In our latest release, we now support discovery and monitoring for PeopleSoft.

Discovery and topology of PeopleSoft applications

It begins with discovery. First, discover the Oracle Database used by the PeopleSoft application. Next, discover PeopleSoft by specifying component connection details and their corresponding monitoring credentials. Then initiate the discovery job using the command line tool, following the instructions in the documentation. Once the discovery job has completed, the PeopleSoft application and its components such as PSFT Application Server Domain and PSFT Process Scheduler Domain, as well as the underlying WebLogic Domain and WebLogic Servers will be discovered.

The topology of the PeopleSoft application is also constructed and includes the dependent WebLogic Server and Oracle Database, enabling correlation of the PeopleSoft application's performance with the performance of its underlying dependencies.

Monitoring of status, health, and performance of PeopleSoft automatically starts after discovery.

Holistic application monitoring – PeopleSoft application home page

The PeopleSoft application home page provides the entry point to monitor PeopleSoft. Quickly check the availability status of all PeopleSoft components, including the dependent WebLogic Server and Oracle Database, and identify any component that is down. Review a summary of all open alarms across all components and further investigate each alarm.

Utilize the Stack View to review vital signs across the PeopleSoft stack. Verify that Application Server Domain Health is Ok, its current Load is not Heavy, Server Processes are running and the volume of requests in their corresponding queues is manageable. Perform a similar check for the Process Scheduler Domain’s Health and System Load, and PIA’s Health and System Load. Going down the stack you can review the WebLogic Server’s key metrics such as JVM Memory Utilization and the status of the Thread Pool.

Switch to the Members page to easily access and drill down on any component such as the Application Server Domain.

Use the Application Server Domain home page to review its current Health and trend of performance metrics. Correlate Health against the current System Load. Check the volume of queued requests against the number of server processes available to handle the requests. Review the trend of request throughput to verify that it can keep up with demand.

To troubleshoot issues that may be rooted in the underlying tech stack, from the PeopleSoft home page, you can use Related Resources to view all dependencies in a single page. Drilldown to the dependent WebLogic Server, Oracle Database, or host to review their respective status and performance.

Alarm notification of PeopleSoft outages or performance issues

All status and performance data are sent to OCI Monitoring to enable setting up of alarms and notifications. For example, set up alarm rules to trigger alarms when a resource such as Application Server Domain or Process Scheduler Domain goes down, when Server Processes fail, when the Application Server Doman Health goes to Critical status, or when the Process Scheduler Domain’s Load becomes Heavy. Use OCI Notifications to send email or other types of notifications when alarms trigger. Refer to the documentation for a list of recommended alarm rules for PeopleSoft.
