NBCOlympics.com has just announced last week that they will offer close to 2000 hours of coverage over the web. Additionally, they will be using Sun to help them provide the video streaming infrastructure to make it happen. You can read the press release here. I knew I worked for a great company but when that great company does something for one of the passions, water polo and the Olympics, that I share in life I get excited.
I am a very big water polo fan. I played a little in college and high school and even coached for eight years at Loyola High School of Los Angeles. Every four years when the Olympics convenes, it is a chance to see the greatest athletes play one of the toughest sports in the world, Water Polo. It is rare for Water Polo to get coverage in the Olympics. The USA team has not been in the medal round since we won Silver in 1984 and1988. It is also rare in the sport of water polo for all the best teams to get together and play. Therefore, it makes the Olympic championships even more special because it provides a venue for the greatest athletes to play for their nation for the ultimate prize--Olympic Gold. I will write more about the USA team later.
One of the great features about the site is the ability to use a widget to search for news, video and other feature stories about your favorite sport. The interface allows you to then share your favorite information via any number of social networking sites or content aggregation sites. You can even post directly to your blog. You can see a great video of the last Olympic Gold Medal match between Hungary and Serbia-Montenegro. Here is the widget.
Here is a quick rundown on the technology that is running the video streaming infrastructure on NBCOlympics.com from the press release. You can read the press release here.
The NBCOlympics.com site is supported by 160 Sun Fire X4450 and Sun Fire X4150 servers. These Intel Xeon processor-based x64 servers combine world-class performance, high compute density and storage with compact footprints and leading energy efficiency. In the lead-up to and during the games, Sun Services will provide installation, engineering expertise and support to NBCOlympics.com.
Here is a quick rundown of the times that the USA team will be broadcast via TV or the internet. This schedule was compiled by the Ventura County Star.
