NetBeans 6.8 RC 2 is out

On Friday, there was published the second release candidate of NetBeans 6.8. You can download the build here.

When we discussed the features for NetBeans 6.9, some people complain about slow scanning and editing. If this experience is based on NetBeans 6.7.1 (which had known performance problems), please try NetBeans 6.8 RC2. We believe the speed has improved significantly. If you still face performance problems with the release candidate build, please let us know the details and we will try hard to improve the performance for your scenario.

Comments:

Great news, thank you. When will be the final version release ?

If there will not be stoppers, then there will be the final build probably next week.

Great! What is new against rc1?

Posted by Pet on December 07, 2009 at 07:05 AM CET #

The difference between RC1 and RC2 is a few fixes of serious bugs. If I remember, there were fixed about 6 bugs in all NetBeans, no one in PHP.

Trying RC2 in comparison to 6.7.1 and I seem to see the "Scanning in progress" or "Please Wait" a lot more than I did on 6.7.1 when hitting my code completion shortcut (Ctrl+Space).

I don't recall seeing it often in 6.7.1 but in 6.8RC2 it's very obvious.

I am editing in projects where the sources are on a mounted network drive, PHP, no frameworks.

I just updated from rc1 to rc2 and back to rc1.

Reason: NB hangs (10 times a day)
if I try to use ctrl+space
to autocomplete function/class names.

If I try to close NB, it doesnt close, I must kill it.

So the scanning hell seems to be still well .

I wanted to add that my php sources are mounted
as NFS folder on my suse 11.1 64 bit linux.

@Anton, could you send us the stacktrace. It's strange, because there wasn't fixes between RC1 and RC2 in scanning infrastructure neither in PHP.

There's small bug in the experimental hint for variables that aren't used in a scope:

$foo = array(array("sth")); // bug: hint, not used in this scope
$bar = $foo[0][0];

Thanks Josef,

I have created new issue for it ( https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=178364 )

Petr

I see this too, the scanning in 6.8RC2 often seems to stall with 100% CPU. This prevents code completion and stops the navigator working. It also prevents NetBeans from quitting properly (I have to Force Quit) - to the extent that 6.8RC2 has yet to save my workspace ("open files" etc) in five days' use.

Any plans (for future releases) to make something like "PHP5 code to UML"?

Posted by Tautvydas on December 09, 2009 at 11:26 PM CET #

@ Tautvydas: I don't know about any plan with UML.

@ Martin: Could you send me stacktrace in such situation? Also you can try swith off the option that code completion is always active (Tools->Options->Editor->Code Completion->Langauage PHP->All Possible situation should be off.
